Target MBB and Big Four firms first
McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, and Accenture have established immigration programs and sponsor H-1B visas at scale. Their structured processes mean faster LCA certification and fewer administrative delays during your application.
Match your degree field to the role
USCIS requires a direct connection between your degree and the strategy consultant position. Business, economics, engineering, or finance degrees typically satisfy specialty occupation requirements. A general studies degree without relevant coursework creates unnecessary risk.
Join a firm before the H-1B lottery window
H-1B registrations open in March for an October start date. Timing your offer to land before the lottery closes is critical. Firms that miss the window may place you on OPT or explore cap-exempt alternatives while you wait.
Explore boutique and niche consulting firms
Smaller strategy firms in healthcare, financial services, and technology regularly sponsor visas for specialized consultants. Competition for roles is lower, and boutique firms often move faster through hiring decisions than large enterprise employers.
Clarify sponsorship scope before accepting an offer
Some firms sponsor H-1B status but not green card sponsorship. Confirm upfront whether the employer supports PERM labor certification and I-140 filing, particularly if long-term U.S. residency is part of your career plan.
Use your experience to strengthen the specialty occupation case
If your degree field is adjacent rather than direct, documented consulting experience in a specialized domain strengthens the petition. Industry-specific expertise in life sciences, technology, or finance supports the argument that the role requires theoretical knowledge.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do strategy consulting firms commonly sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes. Large management consulting firms are among the most active H-1B visa sponsors in the country. Firms like Deloitte, Accenture, McKinsey, and BCG file hundreds of petitions each year. Boutique firms with specialized practices also sponsor regularly, though their processes are less standardized. Migrate Mate lists consulting roles filtered by verified sponsorship history, so you can focus on employers with a real track record.
What degree do I need to qualify for an H-1B as a strategy consultant?
USCIS requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field directly related to the role. For strategy consulting, business administration, economics, finance, engineering, or a quantitative field typically satisfies this. A general degree with unrelated coursework is harder to defend. If your degree is in a different field, documented specialization or an advanced degree in a qualifying subject can help close the gap.
Is strategy consulting approved as a specialty occupation by USCIS?
Generally yes, but the framing of the job duties matters significantly. Petitions that describe generic advisory work face more scrutiny than those tied to a specific industry or analytical function. Consulting roles in healthcare strategy, financial restructuring, or technology implementation tend to have stronger specialty occupation arguments. Your employer's immigration attorney should tailor the petition to the specific scope of your role, not use a boilerplate description.
Can I switch consulting firms while on an H-1B?
Yes, H-1B portability allows you to change employers once your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition. You can typically start the new role as soon as the petition is filed, without waiting for approval. The new firm must file a new LCA reflecting the position and work location. Most established consulting firms are familiar with this process and can move quickly.
What visa options exist if I miss the H-1B lottery as a strategy consultant?
Australian citizens can apply for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and a 10,500 annual cap that has never been fully used. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify under the TN visa for management consultant roles. O-1A is an option for consultants with exceptional recognition in their field. Some firms also have cap-exempt affiliations through nonprofits or universities that allow H-1B filing outside the lottery system.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Strategy Consultant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
