Job description
About this role
About BlackRock:
BlackRock is a global leader in investment management, investing and protecting over $14 trillion (USD) in assets worldwide. Our technology platform powers investment operations at global scale and enables better financial outcomes for millions of investors.
As a technologist at BlackRock, you’ll work on systems that combine the pace and ownership of a product company with the scale, complexity, and impact of one of the world’s most sophisticated financial institutions.
Team Overview:
The Aladdin Private Markets – Whole Portfolio team builds and operates the core platforms and integrations that enable clients to manage public and private market investments through a single, end to end investment operating ecosystem.
The team is highly engineering driven, with a strong focus on scalability, data quality, resilience, and auditability, and partners closely with product, client implementations, and operations to deliver reliable, production grade outcomes for complex institutional clients.
Role Summary:
We are looking for a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer (VP) to play a key role in advancing the Whole Portfolio Solution. This role sits at the intersection of product engineering and technical leadership.
You will work across UI, backend services, and integration layers, owning complex problem spaces that directly impact how the world’s largest asset managers operate public and private market portfolios. This is a hands on leadership role with real architectural influence and ownership of production systems.
As the Aladdin ecosystem continues to incorporate AI assisted workflows and automation, you’ll help identify and deliver pragmatic, high value use cases that improve reliability, developer productivity, and client outcomes.
What You’ll Do:
- Design, build, and evolve end to end full stack solutions spanning frontends, backend services, and integration pipelines
- Provide technical leadership for complex domains within the Whole Portfolio platform, influencing architecture and long term design decisions
- Partner closely with product managers and business stakeholders to translate private markets workflows into scalable, production ready systems
- Drive engineering excellence across code quality, testing, observability, reliability, and CI/CD practices
- Lead by example in modern engineering practices, including AI assisted development, automation, and developer tooling
- Own services in production: monitoring, performance tuning, incident response, and continuous improvement
- Mentor and guide senior and mid level engineers, raising the technical bar of the team
What We’re Looking For:
Required
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including ownership of production systems at scale
- Strong expertise in C#/.NET or Java, and React with TypeScript (full stack depth required)
- Willingness and ability to learn and contribute in both Java and .NET codebases, using modern GenAI assisted development tools to accelerate ramp up and maintain engineering velocity
- We value technical depth in at least one core language and a demonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly over prior experience in every stack
- Experience designing and operating distributed systems in production environments
- Proven ability to lead complex technical initiatives and influence architecture without formal authority
- Strong communication skills and comfort working with product, operations, and non engineering stakeholders
- Experience working in Agile teams and delivering iteratively in a fast moving environment
- Demonstrated experience using AI assisted development tools as part of real engineering workflows
Nice to Have:
- Python experience
- Cloud experience (Azure preferred; AWS/GCP also valuable)
- Experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD platforms (e.g., Azure DevOps)
- Search or data platform experience (e.g., Elasticsearch)
- Financial services, SaaS, or complex enterprise domain experience
For Atlanta, GA Only the salary range for this position is USD$148,000.00 - USD$200,000.00. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, and benefits including healthcare, leave benefits, and retirement benefits. BlackRock operates a pay-for-performance compensation philosophy and your total compensation may vary based on role, location, and firm, department and individual performance.
Our benefits
To help you stay energized, engaged and inspired, we offer a wide range of benefits including a strong retirement plan, tuition reimbursement, comprehensive healthcare, support for working parents and Flexible Time Off (FTO) so you can relax, recharge and be there for the people you care about.

Lead with your full-stack depth, not breadth
H-1B approvals for Full Stack Engineers hinge on demonstrating specialized expertise. Highlight mastery of specific frameworks and architectures rather than listing every language you've touched. USCIS scrutinizes generalist profiles more heavily than deep specialists.
Confirm the role requires a relevant bachelor's degree
Specialty occupation status requires the position to normally require a degree in a specific field. Roles listed as requiring 'any technical degree' are harder to sponsor. Target postings that specify computer science, software engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Prioritize employers with a sponsorship track record
Companies that have sponsored Full Stack Engineers before understand the LCA and I-129 process. First-time sponsors face longer timelines and more documentation requests. A proven sponsorship history signals smoother processing and stronger employer commitment.
Document your system design and architecture experience
Senior-level H-1B petitions require evidence the role demands advanced expertise. Concrete examples of distributed systems, API design decisions, or scalability work you've owned strengthen the job duty description and support the specialty occupation argument.
Understand cap-exempt employer options
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government research organizations are exempt from the H-1B lottery. Full Stack roles exist at many of these employers. A cap-exempt offer means you can start work immediately after approval, without waiting for October 1.
Australian citizens should evaluate the E-3 visa
The E-3 visa is exclusive to Australian citizens and has no lottery. Full Stack Engineers qualify as specialty occupation workers, making E-3 a faster and more predictable path than H-1B for eligible applicants. Renewals are unlimited in two-year increments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Full Stack Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS consistently recognizes software engineering and full stack development as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. The key risk is if the job description is written too broadly. Postings that require a degree in 'any field' rather than a specific technical discipline are more likely to face a Request for Evidence challenging specialty occupation status.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for Full Stack Engineers compared to other engineering roles?
Full Stack Engineers are among the most frequently sponsored job titles in the H-1B visa program. DOL LCA disclosure data consistently shows high filing volumes for this title at major tech employers. That said, everyone still enters the same lottery. The advantage is that employers are familiar with sponsoring this role, which reduces processing friction once selected. Browse sponsored Full Stack openings on Migrate Mate to identify employers actively filing petitions.
Does my degree need to be in computer science specifically, or will other degrees qualify?
Not necessarily computer science. USCIS accepts degrees in software engineering, information systems, computer engineering, and closely related fields. What matters is that the degree field is directly relevant to the role's duties. A mathematics or electrical engineering degree can qualify if you can demonstrate the coursework aligns with the position. Degrees in unrelated fields, even paired with strong experience, are harder to support without additional evidence.
Can work experience substitute for a bachelor's degree in a Full Stack Engineer H-1B petition?
Yes, under a specific equivalency formula. Three years of progressive, specialized work experience in the field can substitute for one year of formal education. To replace a four-year degree, you'd need 12 years of relevant experience, typically documented through expert opinion letters and detailed employment records. This path is viable but requires stronger supporting evidence and carries more USCIS scrutiny than petitions backed by a directly relevant degree.
What happens to my H-1B status if I want to change employers as a Senior Full Stack Engineer?
You can change employers using H-1B portability, which allows you to start work with a new employer as soon as they file a new I-129 petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval. This applies as long as your current H-1B has been approved for at least 180 days and the new role is in a same or similar occupational classification. Your status remains valid while the new petition is pending.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Senior Full Stack Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
