Most vp of engineering roles in California require a technical degree followed by a career progression through individual contributor, engineering manager, director, and senior director positions before the VP level is within reach. California's technology industry rewards engineers who combine hands-on technical credibility with organizational leadership, so candidates who have managed multi-team organizations, driven architectural decisions, and delivered products at scale are most competitive. No state-issued license is required for the role itself.
How much do VP of engineerings make in California?
VP of engineerings in California earn a median of about $210,280 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $137,900 for the lowest 10% to over $296,130 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire vp of engineerings in California?

California's density of technology headquarters, from large enterprise software companies in the Bay Area to defense and semiconductor firms in Southern California, means the employer landscape covers a wide range of engineering domains and company stages.
Which California cities have the most vp of engineering jobs?
San Francisco, Palo Alto, and San Diego have the most vp of engineering openings in California. The Bay Area leads because of its concentration of technology headquarters and late-stage startups, while Los Angeles draws demand from media technology, aerospace, and consumer software companies, and San Diego is anchored by telecommunications, biotech, and defense engineering employers.
