Billing Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a billing manager in California?
The concrete path is an associate or bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or healthcare administration, followed by several years in billing or revenue cycle roles. California does not require a state license to work as a billing manager, but employers in the healthcare sector strongly prefer candidates with a Certified Professional Biller credential from the American Academy of Professional Coders or a Certified Revenue Cycle Professional designation, both of which are widely recognized by California health systems and medical groups.
How much do billing managers make in California?
Billing managers in California earn a median of about $180,770 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $101,820 for the lowest 10% to over $341,670 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire billing managers in California?
Employers hiring billing managers in California right now include Commure, Walmart, and Jobot, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of large integrated health systems, tech-adjacent healthcare startups, and multi-site medical groups means consistent demand well beyond the handful of household names.
Which California cities have the most billing manager jobs?
San Francisco, San Bruno, and Fresno have the most billing manager openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its dense concentration of hospital systems, specialty clinics, and entertainment-industry insurers, while San Francisco and San Diego draw postings from technology companies with internal billing teams and from the large biotech and life sciences employers that anchor those regional economies.
Are there remote billing manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 0% of billing manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how thoroughly the role shifted to digital systems and cloud-based platforms during and after the pandemic. The functions most often worked remotely are accounts receivable oversight, denial management, and payer contract auditing, while roles tied to front-desk or on-site clinic workflows tend to remain in person.
How can I get hired as a billing manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a billing specialist or patient account representative role at a large California health system such as Dignity Health, UCLA Health, or Sutter Health, all of which run structured onboarding programs that promote from within. Lateral moves from adjacent roles like medical coding, accounts receivable, or front-office coordination are common stepping stones. Earning a Certified Professional Biller credential while in an entry role signals readiness to move up and is a visible differentiator in California healthcare hiring.
Where can I find and apply to billing manager jobs in California?
