OVERVIEW:
The University of St. Thomas Biology Department invites applications for adjunct faculty members to teach lecture courses in either BIOL 208 – Biological Communication and Energetics, or BIOL 209 – Biology of Sustainability, during the Fall 2026 semester. Adjunct appointments are without tenure and are not tenure-track appointments. Both courses are 4-credit core Biology courses (for majors). Course materials are available for use, although the instructor will have some leeway in making modifications to suit their instructional goals. Mentorship will be provided by current faculty with experience teaching these courses.
Biological Communication and Energetics is a lecture-based course focused on cellular and molecular biology. Class size is capped at 48.
Biology of Sustainability is a discussion-based, interactive class focused on the world’s biggest environmental challenges. Class size is capped at 24.
Experience with relevant content is required. Some experience leading a college-level lecture class is preferred. PhD is preferred. This posting is for continuous recruitment. Review of candidates will begin as soon as possible.
The salary range for the College of Arts and Sciences Adjunct positions ranges from $5,994 to $6,717 (per 4 credit undergraduate course). Rate of pay is determined by academic credential and years of teaching experience.
BIOL 208 – Biological Communication and Energetics is scheduled for 8:00-9:40AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the semester (early September to mid-December). All lectures are in person.
There are sections of BIOL 209 – Biology of Sustainability available either 8:15-9:20AM, 9:35-10:40AM, or 10:55AM-12:00PM Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays throughout the semester (early September to mid-December). Monday and Wednesday sessions will be in person, and Friday sessions will be online.
We seek candidates interested in facilitating meaningful experiences between students and faculty that empower undergraduate students to find success and to solve challenging problems in service of the common good.
Adjunct Faculty Teaching Responsibilities to Include:
- Deliver instruction using student-engaged pedagogical approaches
- Provide timely feedback to students re: their grades and progress in course
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Expertise in the subject matter covered in the courses. For BIOL 208, we seek expertise in cell and molecular biology. For BIOL 209, we seek expertise in ecology, evolution, environmental science, and related fields.
- Experience leading a college-level class is preferred.
