Laboratory Jobs in Minnesota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a laboratory professional in Minnesota?
Most clinical laboratory positions in Minnesota require licensure through the Minnesota Department of Health, which oversees laboratory personnel under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 144. Candidates typically complete a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or a related field, then pass the ASCP Board of Certification exam. Some roles, including histotechnician and phlebotomy positions, have separate credential pathways with accredited program requirements before licensure application.
Which companies hire laboratory professionals in Minnesota?
Minnesota laboratory roles are posted by Essentia Health, Fairview Health Services, and Mayo Clinic and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Minnesota's dense concentration of hospital systems, medical device companies, and research institutions means active postings appear year-round across both large employers and specialty clinics.
Which Minnesota cities have the most laboratory jobs?
Minneapolis, Burnsville, and Saint Paul account for the largest share of laboratory openings in Minnesota. Minneapolis and Saint Paul drive volume through their concentration of major health systems and research universities, while Rochester's market is shaped almost entirely by Mayo Clinic and its affiliated facilities, making it one of the most specialized laboratory hiring markets in the country.
Are there remote laboratory jobs in Minnesota?
Yes, but they're rare. About 25% of laboratory openings tied to Minnesota are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the fact that most laboratory work requires physical presence with samples, instruments, or patients. The roles most likely to allow remote arrangements are laboratory data analysis, regulatory affairs, and quality systems positions rather than bench or clinical testing roles.
How can I get hired as a laboratory professional in Minnesota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a phlebotomy or laboratory assistant role, which many Minnesota hospital systems fill without requiring full clinical laboratory licensure. Mayo Clinic, M Health Fairview, and Allina Health regularly post new-graduate and laboratory support positions designed for candidates still completing certification. Volunteering or externship hours through an accredited medical laboratory technician program at institutions like Minnesota State University or Lake Superior College also strengthens applications considerably.
Where can I find and apply to laboratory jobs in Minnesota?
You can find and apply to laboratory jobs in Minnesota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and credentials, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
