Laboratory Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a laboratory in New York?
New York requires clinical laboratory personnel to obtain licensure through the New York State Department of Health, which issues laboratory technologist and technician certificates based on education, supervised experience, and a qualifying examination. Most positions require at least a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or a closely related science field. Candidates must apply to the New York State Department of Health's Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program, which oversees credentialing and sets the specific education and experience requirements for each laboratory category.
Which companies hire laboratorys in New York?
Employers hiring laboratorys in New York right now include Columbia University, NYU Langone Health, and Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense concentration of hospital systems, academic research institutions, and pharmaceutical manufacturers means consistent year-round openings across a wide range of laboratory specialties.
Which New York cities have the most laboratory jobs?
New York, Buffalo, and Rochester have the most laboratory openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its large academic medical centers, diagnostic reference labs, and pharmaceutical headquarters, while Long Island's biotech cluster and the Albany area's public health and research agencies drive steady demand outside the metro core.
Are there remote laboratory jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Laboratory work is largely hands-on and instrument-dependent, so most roles require on-site presence. About 4% of laboratory openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be in data analysis, laboratory informatics, regulatory affairs, or quality systems oversight rather than bench science.
How can I get hired as a laboratory in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a laboratory assistant or phlebotomy technician role at a large New York hospital system such as Northwell Health or NYC Health and Hospitals, which regularly hire candidates without full technologist credentials while they complete licensure requirements. New-graduate and training programs at academic medical centers affiliated with institutions like NYU Langone and Columbia University Irving Medical Center also provide structured pathways. Completing a New York State-recognized clinical laboratory training program and registering with the Department of Health early gives candidates a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to laboratory jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to laboratory jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring in the state right now. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and specialty, and apply directly to each position.
