Biomedical Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a biomedical in California?
Most California employers hire biomedical equipment technicians who hold CBET certification from the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, which is the benchmark credential recognized across California health systems. You typically need an associate or bachelor's degree in biomedical technology, electronics, or a closely related field. California does not issue a state license specific to biomedical technicians, so the CBET and relevant education are the clearest path to qualifying for hospital and clinical roles here.
How much do biomedicals make in California?
Biomedicals in California earn a median of about $128,310 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $89,420 for the lowest 10% to over $179,810 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire biomedicals in California?
Employers hiring biomedicals in California right now include Apple, Brainlab, and Abbott, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense concentration of acute care hospitals, integrated health systems, and medical device headquarters means consistent demand across both clinical service and engineering roles.
Which California cities have the most biomedical jobs?
Irvine, San Francisco, and Santa Clara have the most biomedical openings in California right now. San Diego's large cluster of medical device manufacturers and life sciences companies drives strong device-side demand, the Bay Area's hospital networks and biotech campuses anchor clinical and engineering roles, and Los Angeles draws openings through its sprawling network of large acute care and specialty hospital systems.
Are there remote biomedical jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Most biomedical work is hands-on and requires physical presence at a hospital, clinic, or laboratory to service and inspect equipment. About 3% of biomedical openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to cluster around technical documentation, regulatory affairs support, or field service coordination rather than direct equipment maintenance.
How can I get hired as a biomedical in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to biomedical equipment technician apprenticeship or trainee programs run by large California health systems such as Kaiser Permanente and Dignity Health, which bring on candidates with an electronics or biomedical associate degree and train them on-site. Adjacent roles in clinical engineering support, medical equipment repair, or electronics maintenance at a California community hospital are also common stepping stones. Earning your CBET certification early, even as a candidate, signals commitment and gives you a concrete edge in a competitive California applicant pool.
Where can I find and apply to biomedical jobs in California?
