Certified Medical Assistant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a certified medical assistant in New York?
New York does not require a state-issued license for medical assistants, but most employers require a national certification such as the CMA from the American Association of Medical Assistants or the RMA from American Medical Technologists. To qualify, you complete an accredited medical assisting program, typically an associate degree or diploma from a community college or vocational school, then pass the corresponding exam. Employers in New York's competitive health systems strongly prefer nationally certified candidates.
How much do certified medical assistants make in New York?
Certified medical assistants in New York earn a median of about $48,000 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,280 for the lowest 10% to over $59,480 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire certified medical assistants in New York?
Employers hiring certified medical assistants in New York right now include Kaleida Health, Cayuga Medical Center, and Sun River Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large integrated health systems and physician practice networks tend to post the most consistent volume of openings across the state.
Which New York cities have the most certified medical assistant jobs?
Buffalo, Montour Falls, and Bronx have the most certified medical assistant openings in New York. New York City leads because of its sheer concentration of hospital systems, specialty clinics, and federally qualified health centers, while secondary markets like Buffalo and Albany generate steady volume through regional health systems and academic medical centers anchoring the surrounding communities.
Are there remote certified medical assistant jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of certified medical assistant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that most CMA duties require hands-on patient contact. The remote openings that do exist tend to be administrative-only positions focused on prior authorization, care coordination, or telehealth patient intake rather than clinical work.
How can I get hired as a certified medical assistant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to externship-to-hire programs built into accredited CMA programs at New York community colleges like CUNY borough campuses or Erie Community College, which place students directly with affiliated health system partners. Large New York employers including NYC Health + Hospitals and Northwell Health routinely hire newly certified candidates into support or patient care technician roles as a bridge, and a current national certification gives candidates a clear edge over uncertified applicants in that first hiring round.
Where can I find and apply to certified medical assistant jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to certified medical assistant jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state right now. Find roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to the ones that match.
