Chef Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a chef in Texas?
Texas does not require a state-issued chef's license, but all food handlers must hold a Food Handler Certificate from a program approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services, and supervisors must earn a Food Manager Certification through an accredited exam such as ServSafe. Most Texas employers prefer candidates who have completed a culinary arts program at an institution like the Culinary Institute LeNôtre in Houston or Austin Community College, combined with progressive kitchen experience.
How much do chefs make in Texas?
Chefs in Texas earn a median of about $56,080 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $31,380 for the lowest 10% to over $92,290 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire chefs in Texas?
Employers hiring chefs in Texas right now include Omni Hotels, White Lodging, and Aramark, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large convention hotel industry, hospital and university dining contracts, and independent restaurant scene keep demand for trained chefs consistently high across the state.
Which Texas cities have the most chef jobs?
Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio have the most chef openings in Texas, driven by the concentration of full-service hotels, convention centers, and large restaurant groups in Houston and Dallas, while San Antonio's robust tourism industry and River Walk dining corridor sustain strong ongoing demand for kitchen talent across seniority levels.
Are there remote chef jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 3% of chef openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the fundamentally hands-on nature of kitchen work. The small share of remote opportunities tends to involve culinary consulting, menu development, or virtual cooking instruction rather than traditional restaurant or foodservice roles.
How can I get hired as a chef in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a prep cook or line cook position at a high-volume Texas employer such as a Compass Group-managed campus dining facility, an HEB store kitchen, or a Marriott hotel food and beverage outlet, all of which regularly hire candidates without prior professional experience. Earning a Food Handler Certificate through a Texas Department of State Health Services approved program and completing even a short culinary certificate course at a Texas community college gives candidates a clear advantage when applying to these entry-level openings.
Where can I find and apply to chef jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to chef jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and preferred city, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
