Chef Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a chef in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts does not require a state-issued chef license, but all food service workers must obtain a Massachusetts Food Handler Certification, and most employers expect ServSafe Manager certification as well. Most chefs enter the field through culinary degree programs at institutions like Johnson and Wales or Bunker Hill Community College, or through apprenticeships registered with the American Culinary Federation. Hands-on kitchen experience, starting in prep or line cook roles, is the most common path to advancement.
Which companies hire chefs in Massachusetts?
Companies currently hiring chefs in Massachusetts include Compass Group USA, NexDine, and Burtons Grill & Bar, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Massachusetts's dense concentration of universities, hospitals, and hotel groups means institutional food service employers are among the most consistent sources of chef openings in the state.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most chef jobs?
Boston, Chatham, and Everett have the most chef openings in Massachusetts. Boston drives the largest share of demand through its concentrated restaurant scene, major hotels, and large hospital systems, while Cambridge and Worcester add substantial volume through university dining operations and growing culinary corridors that have attracted independent and group restaurant concepts.
Are there remote chef jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, but they're rare. Chef work is almost entirely hands-on and on-site by nature, so most openings require a physical presence in a kitchen. About 0% of chef openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those roles tend to be in culinary consulting, recipe development, or food content creation rather than traditional kitchen positions.
How can I get hired as a chef in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for prep cook or kitchen assistant roles at large institutional employers such as hospital systems, university dining services, or hotel food and beverage departments, where structured training is common. Massachusetts employers like those operating under Compass Group and Aramark regularly bring on entry-level kitchen staff and promote from within. Completing a ServSafe certification before applying gives candidates a concrete edge, and culinary programs at Bunker Hill Community College offer short-term credentials that satisfy many employer minimums.
Where can I find and apply to chef jobs in Massachusetts?
