Tips for Your Chief Operating Officer Job Search
Quantify operational impact on your resume
COO candidates who list headcount managed, cost reductions achieved, and revenue influenced get more callbacks than those who describe duties. Tie each bullet to a measurable outcome you owned, not one your team delivered collectively.
Tailor your resume to industry operating models
A COO resume that works for a 200-person SaaS company will not resonate at a 2,000-person manufacturer. Reframe your experience around the metrics that matter in each sector: ARR and churn for tech, yield and throughput for operations, patient outcomes for healthcare.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists chief operating officer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target companies at an inflection point
COOs are hired when a company is scaling fast, restructuring, or entering a new market. Filter your search for organizations that recently closed a funding round, changed CEOs, or announced expansion plans, those are the postings most likely to convert.
Prepare a 90-day operating plan before interviews
Boards and CEOs hiring a COO want to see how you diagnose and prioritize. Walking into a final-round interview with a structured 30-60-90 day framework tailored to that company's visible challenges sets you apart from candidates who speak only in generalities.
Negotiate scope before negotiating compensation
Before discussing pay, confirm the reporting structure, which functions you own, and whether the role has budget authority. A COO title without P&L responsibility or direct reports is a step down in influence, regardless of the number attached to it.
Chief Operating Officer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most chief operating officers?
The companies hiring the most chief operating officers right now include DaVita, Emory Healthcare, and Balfour Beatty, with the largest share of openings in Texas, New York, and Georgia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is particularly concentrated in high-growth sectors like technology, healthcare systems, and private equity-backed portfolio companies.
How many chief operating officer jobs are remote?
About 13% of chief operating officer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with on-site roles still dominant because the position requires close coordination with frontline operations. Remote or hybrid flexibility is most common in technology companies, digital-native businesses, and roles focused on strategy and process improvement rather than physical plant or workforce management.
How do you become a chief operating officer?
Most COOs build toward the role by leading a major function, operations, finance, product, or sales, and then taking on cross-functional accountability. The path typically involves managing large teams, owning a P&L, delivering a significant organizational change, and developing a visible relationship with the CEO or board. An MBA helps in some industries but hands-on execution history carries more weight in the hiring decision.
Can you get hired as a chief operating officer with limited executive experience?
It's possible at earlier-stage companies where the COO role is defined more broadly and the candidate is expected to grow with the business. Startups and founder-led companies often hire a first COO from the VP or director level when they need someone to build operational infrastructure from scratch. Demonstrating that you've owned a function end-to-end and driven measurable outcomes matters more than a prior COO title.
What does the chief operating officer interview process look like?
The process typically runs four to six rounds and includes a screening call, a structured interview with the CEO or founder, a panel with functional leaders you'd oversee, a presentation or case study on an operational challenge, and a final conversation with the board or key stakeholders. Reference checks at the COO level are thorough and often include calls with former direct reports, not just supervisors.
Where can I find and apply to chief operating officer jobs?
You can find and apply to chief operating officer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from companies across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your industry background and experience level, then apply directly to each one that fits.
