Civil Project Manager Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a civil project manager in Massachusetts?
The most direct path starts with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering followed by licensure as a Professional Engineer through the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Professional Engineers, which requires passing the Fundamentals of Engineering and Principles and Practice of Engineering exams plus documented work experience. Most Massachusetts employers expect candidates to hold or be actively pursuing a PE license before moving into a project manager role, and many pair that with a PMP credential for larger public agency or design-build positions.
How much do civil project managers make in Massachusetts?
Civil project managers in Massachusetts earn a median of about $114,190 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,800 for the lowest 10% to over $174,840 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire civil project managers in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring civil project managers in Massachusetts right now include Skanska, VHB, and Haley Ward, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Massachusetts's large volume of publicly funded infrastructure work means state agencies, regional transit authorities, and engineering consulting firms are consistently among the most active hirers in the state.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most civil project manager jobs?
The cities with the most civil project manager openings in Massachusetts are Boston, Acton, and Auburn. Greater Boston dominates because it anchors the state's largest concentration of engineering firms, MassDOT regional offices, and MBTA capital projects, while Worcester and Springfield draw hiring through regional municipal work, university campus construction, and state highway corridor programs that run through central and western Massachusetts.
Are there remote civil project manager jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, but they're rare. Civil project management is a field-oriented role that requires regular site visits, contractor coordination, and in-person reviews with municipal clients, which limits full remote arrangements. About 20% of civil project manager openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those postings typically involve design-phase coordination, grant writing, or program oversight duties rather than active construction management.
How can I get hired as a civil project manager in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a staff engineer or project engineer role at a Massachusetts transportation or municipal engineering firm, where you assist licensed PEs on MassDOT or water authority projects while accumulating the hours needed for PE licensure. Large Massachusetts employers like CDM Smith and Jacobs run structured new-graduate programs that rotate candidates through infrastructure disciplines. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early and gaining any site experience on roadway or drainage projects gives candidates a measurable edge over those without it.
Where can I find and apply to civil project manager jobs in Massachusetts?
