Job Description
Business Development is a critical pillar of AbbVie’s future growth, and Global Business Development Forecasting helps determine which external opportunities can create the greatest long-term value. The team brings commercial insight, analytical rigor, and strategic clarity to high-stakes BD decisions by translating science, market dynamics, competitive context, and uncertainty into actionable forecasts.
The Associate Director plays a high-impact and highly visible role in this process, leading forecasts and commercial perspectives that shape executive understanding of opportunity value, risk, and strategic fit. Working across R&D, Commercial, Pipeline Commercial Strategy, CBSO, BD Finance, and other partners, this role sits at the intersection of scientific innovation and commercial strategy and directly supports decisions that influence AbbVie’s future portfolio.
Success requires strong forecasting and commercial analytics expertise, rigorous assumption development, clear executive communication, and the ability to influence across a matrixed organization. Candidates should be curious, collaborative, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to create structure in fast-moving situations. For the right candidate, the role offers meaningful growth through exposure to senior leaders, enterprise-wide relationships, and deeper understanding of both R&D and Commercial strategy.
This role reports to the Director, Global Business Development Forecasting.
Responsibilities
- Lead commercial forecasting, market assessments, scenario analyses, and commercial P&Ls for BD opportunities, balancing analytical rigor with timely decision support in a fast-paced environment.
- Develop patient-based forecast models, pressure-test assumptions, and apply primary research, secondary data, epidemiology, competitive intelligence, market access input, and expert perspectives to build a well-supported commercial view.
- Partner broadly across BD, PCS, finance, market access, epidemiology, marketing analytics, and senior leadership to align assumptions, clarify risks and opportunities, and ensure commercial perspectives are reflected in deal valuation and governance discussions.
- Translate complex analyses into clear recommendations, executive-ready narratives, and decision options for senior leaders and governance forums, facilitating productive discussion around uncertainty, trade-offs, and strategic implications.
- Advance BD forecasting capabilities by sharing best practices, improving tools and processes, and helping create faster, more consistent, and audit-ready ways of working.
Qualifications
- Education and experience: 7+ years of relevant forecasting, market analytics, finance, or life sciences consulting experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or related industries; MBA or other advanced degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree in finance/accounting or business required.
- Forecasting and analytics skills: Experience building forecast models in Excel and forecasting platforms such as IQVIA Forecast Horizon; ability to develop and/or utilize patient-flow modeling approaches, craft robust assumptions, and prepare evidence-based forecast inputs from epidemiology, secondary data, market research, treatment dynamics, competitive profiles, and expert input. Familiar with key data sources used to substantiate forecast recommendations and demonstrated ability to clearly document forecast assumption logic and rationale. Familiarity with using and crafting Target Product Profiles (TPPs), establishing and aligning analytical business rules and market definitions, and leveraging claims data analytics is also highly desirable.
- Business and therapeutic area knowledge: Experience supporting strategic decision making in specialized therapeutic areas such as Neuroscience, Immunology, Oncology, or other complex markets is preferred; ability to apply data, assumptions, and market context effectively is critical.
- Communication and influence: Strong executive communication skills, including the ability to tailor messages by audience, translate complex quantitative analyses into recommendations and decision options, and influence stakeholders across functions and cultures without direct authority.
- Project leadership: Strong project management skills in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment, with the ability to prioritize multiple workstreams, communicate trade-offs, escalate risks appropriately, and deliver high-quality work under time pressure.

Align your credentials with specialty occupation standards
Business Development Director roles at AbbVie typically require a graduate degree in life sciences, pharmacy, or business. Gather transcripts and credential evaluations early so your degree field clearly maps to the role's scientific and commercial requirements.
Target AbbVie's therapeutic area business units
AbbVie organizes business development around specific therapeutic areas like oncology, immunology, and neuroscience. Applications tied to a pipeline area where AbbVie is actively in-licensing or acquiring tend to move faster through internal approval.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open roles efficiently
Business Development Director openings at AbbVie appear across multiple divisions and are not always centrally listed. Use Migrate Mate to filter and track sponsorship-confirmed postings so you reach hiring managers before roles close.
Negotiate offer timing around LCA filing windows
Your employer must file a certified Labor Condition Application with DOL before USCIS can process your H-1B or E-3 petition. Request your written offer early enough to build in LCA processing time, which typically runs seven to ten business days.
Clarify which visa type AbbVie will file during offer stage
AbbVie sponsors multiple visa categories including H-1B, E-3, TN, and H-1B1 visa depending on your citizenship. Confirm the specific petition type in writing before you resign from any current role, since each category has different timelines and portability rules.
Prepare for PERM if your goal is permanent residence
Senior business development hires at large pharmaceutical employers often begin PERM-based Green Card sponsorship under EB-2 or EB-3 after a period of employment. Ask your AbbVie recruiter about their standard timeline for initiating PERM to plan your long-term status accordingly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AbbVie sponsor H-1B visas for Business Development Directors?
Yes, AbbVie sponsors H-1B visas for Business Development Director roles. Because these positions require specialized knowledge across pharmaceutical licensing, deal structuring, and therapeutic science, they typically qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards. AbbVie's legal and HR teams manage the petition process, including the required Labor Condition Application filed with DOL.
Which visa types does AbbVie commonly use for Business Development Director roles?
AbbVie sponsors H-1B, E-3 visa, H-1B1 visa, TN visa, and J-1 visas for business development roles, as well as OPT and CPT for candidates still on F-1 status. Australian citizens are strong candidates for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and is available year-round. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for TN visa status under the USMCA professional categories. Long-term hires are often supported through EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship.
How do I apply for Business Development Director jobs at AbbVie?
Applications go through AbbVie's careers portal, but roles are spread across therapeutic area divisions and alliance management teams, which makes them easy to miss. Migrate Mate aggregates sponsorship-confirmed Business Development Director openings at AbbVie so you can browse current listings in one place. Tailor your application to the specific pipeline or therapeutic focus of the team hiring.
What qualifications does AbbVie expect for Business Development Directors?
AbbVie generally looks for a graduate degree in life sciences, medicine, or business combined with direct experience in pharmaceutical licensing, corporate development, or strategic alliances. Candidates who have worked on in-licensing transactions, co-promotion agreements, or early-stage asset evaluations are competitive. Familiarity with AbbVie's core therapeutic areas, particularly oncology and immunology, strengthens your application considerably.
How do I manage visa timing when transitioning to AbbVie from another employer?
If you are already on H-1B status, AbbVie can file an H-1B transfer petition and you can begin work once USCIS receives it, without waiting for approval. For other categories, timing depends on your current status and remaining authorized period. Request your offer letter as early as possible so AbbVie's immigration team can assess whether premium processing through USCIS is needed to meet your start date.
