Job Description
Business Development is a critical pillar of AbbVie’s future growth, and Global Business Development Forecasting helps determine which external opportunities can create the greatest long-term value. The team brings commercial insight, analytical rigor, and strategic clarity to high-stakes BD decisions by translating science, market dynamics, competitive context, and uncertainty into actionable forecasts.
The Associate Director plays a high-impact and highly visible role in this process, leading forecasts and commercial perspectives that shape executive understanding of opportunity value, risk, and strategic fit. Working across R&D, Commercial, Pipeline Commercial Strategy, CBSO, BD Finance, and other partners, this role sits at the intersection of scientific innovation and commercial strategy and directly supports decisions that influence AbbVie’s future portfolio.
Success requires strong forecasting and commercial analytics expertise, rigorous assumption development, clear executive communication, and the ability to influence across a matrixed organization. Candidates should be curious, collaborative, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to create structure in fast-moving situations. For the right candidate, the role offers meaningful growth through exposure to senior leaders, enterprise-wide relationships, and deeper understanding of both R&D and Commercial strategy.
This role reports to the Director, Global Business Development Forecasting.
Responsibilities
- Lead commercial forecasting, market assessments, scenario analyses, and commercial P&Ls for BD opportunities, balancing analytical rigor with timely decision support in a fast-paced environment.
- Develop patient-based forecast models, pressure-test assumptions, and apply primary research, secondary data, epidemiology, competitive intelligence, market access input, and expert perspectives to build a well-supported commercial view.
- Partner broadly across BD, PCS, finance, market access, epidemiology, marketing analytics, and senior leadership to align assumptions, clarify risks and opportunities, and ensure commercial perspectives are reflected in deal valuation and governance discussions.
- Translate complex analyses into clear recommendations, executive-ready narratives, and decision options for senior leaders and governance forums, facilitating productive discussion around uncertainty, trade-offs, and strategic implications.
- Advance BD forecasting capabilities by sharing best practices, improving tools and processes, and helping create faster, more consistent, and audit-ready ways of working.
Qualifications
- Education and experience: 7+ years of relevant forecasting, market analytics, finance, or life sciences consulting experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or related industries; MBA or other advanced degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree in finance/accounting or business required.
- Forecasting and analytics skills: Experience building forecast models in Excel and forecasting platforms such as IQVIA Forecast Horizon; ability to develop and/or utilize patient-flow modeling approaches, craft robust assumptions, and prepare evidence-based forecast inputs from epidemiology, secondary data, market research, treatment dynamics, competitive profiles, and expert input. Familiar with key data sources used to substantiate forecast recommendations and demonstrated ability to clearly document forecast assumption logic and rationale. Familiarity with using and crafting Target Product Profiles (TPPs), establishing and aligning analytical business rules and market definitions, and leveraging claims data analytics is also highly desirable.
- Business and therapeutic area knowledge: Experience supporting strategic decision making in specialized therapeutic areas such as Neuroscience, Immunology, Oncology, or other complex markets is preferred; ability to apply data, assumptions, and market context effectively is critical.
- Communication and influence: Strong executive communication skills, including the ability to tailor messages by audience, translate complex quantitative analyses into recommendations and decision options, and influence stakeholders across functions and cultures without direct authority.
- Project leadership: Strong project management skills in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment, with the ability to prioritize multiple workstreams, communicate trade-offs, escalate risks appropriately, and deliver high-quality work under time pressure.

Frame your BD experience around therapeutic focus areas
AbbVie's Business Development hiring centers on specific portfolios like oncology, immunology, and aesthetics. Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight deal experience or partnership work that maps directly to those therapeutic areas, not just generic BD skills.
Verify your visa category before applying
AbbVie sponsors multiple visa types including H-1B, E-3, TN, and F-1 OPT. Knowing which category applies to your situation lets you have an informed conversation with their recruitment team early, rather than discovering a mismatch after an offer is extended.
Target roles that align with your degree field
H-1B and E-3 specialty occupation requirements mean your academic background needs to connect to the role. Business Development positions at a pharma company often require life sciences or business degrees, so make that connection explicit in your application materials.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open BD roles that sponsor
Searching for sponsorship-friendly BD roles at large pharma companies manually is slow. Use Migrate Mate to filter AbbVie's Business Development openings by visa type so you only spend time on roles that match your authorization situation.
Understand PERM timing if you're targeting permanent residency
If your goal is an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card, ask the recruiter when PERM sponsorship typically begins for Business Development hires. PERM labor market testing has strict DOL timelines, and starting that conversation during the offer stage saves months of delays later.
Request an early HR screening to confirm sponsorship scope
AbbVie's Business Development roles span alliance management, licensing, and M&A strategy, each with different internal budget approval processes for sponsorship. Confirming sponsorship eligibility for the specific sub-function during the initial HR call avoids wasted interview rounds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AbbVie sponsor H-1B visas for Business Developments?
Yes, AbbVie sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Business Development roles. The position needs to meet USCIS specialty occupation standards, which generally means a direct relationship between the role's duties and a specific bachelor's-level field such as life sciences, finance, or business. Confirming this fit early in the recruitment process helps avoid complications once an offer is made.
How do I apply for Business Development jobs at AbbVie?
Applications go through AbbVie's careers portal, where you can search by function and location. For international candidates, Migrate Mate lets you filter AbbVie's open Business Development positions by visa sponsorship type so you can focus on roles that match your authorization status before submitting. Tailoring your application to AbbVie's therapeutic focus areas improves your chances of getting screened.
Which visa types does AbbVie commonly sponsor for Business Development roles?
AbbVie sponsors H-1B, H-1B1 visa, E-3 visa, and TN visas for nonimmigrant work authorization, along with F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates. For candidates pursuing permanent residency, EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM is also available. The right category depends on your nationality, degree, and the specific role's requirements.
What qualifications does AbbVie typically expect for Business Development hires?
AbbVie's Business Development roles typically require backgrounds in life sciences combined with commercial or finance experience. Positions focused on licensing and alliance management often expect prior pharma or biotech deal exposure. Advanced degrees such as an MBA or a graduate science degree are common, particularly for roles that involve evaluating clinical-stage assets or negotiating partnership structures.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship for an AbbVie BD role?
The H-1B cap lottery opens in March each year for an October 1 start date, so timing your offer and acceptance matters. If you're on F-1 OPT, you have a 60-day grace period after employment ends to secure a new sponsor. Raising the sponsorship conversation with AbbVie's recruiting team before the final interview stage gives both sides enough lead time to coordinate USCIS filing deadlines.
