Job Description
Business Development is a critical pillar of AbbVie’s future growth, and Global Business Development Forecasting helps determine which external opportunities can create the greatest long-term value. The team brings commercial insight, analytical rigor, and strategic clarity to high-stakes BD decisions by translating science, market dynamics, competitive context, and uncertainty into actionable forecasts.
The Associate Director plays a high-impact and highly visible role in this process, leading forecasts and commercial perspectives that shape executive understanding of opportunity value, risk, and strategic fit. Working across R&D, Commercial, Pipeline Commercial Strategy, CBSO, BD Finance, and other partners, this role sits at the intersection of scientific innovation and commercial strategy and directly supports decisions that influence AbbVie’s future portfolio.
Success requires strong forecasting and commercial analytics expertise, rigorous assumption development, clear executive communication, and the ability to influence across a matrixed organization. Candidates should be curious, collaborative, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to create structure in fast-moving situations. For the right candidate, the role offers meaningful growth through exposure to senior leaders, enterprise-wide relationships, and deeper understanding of both R&D and Commercial strategy.
This role reports to the Director, Global Business Development Forecasting.
Responsibilities
- Lead commercial forecasting, market assessments, scenario analyses, and commercial P&Ls for BD opportunities, balancing analytical rigor with timely decision support in a fast-paced environment.
- Develop patient-based forecast models, pressure-test assumptions, and apply primary research, secondary data, epidemiology, competitive intelligence, market access input, and expert perspectives to build a well-supported commercial view.
- Partner broadly across BD, PCS, finance, market access, epidemiology, marketing analytics, and senior leadership to align assumptions, clarify risks and opportunities, and ensure commercial perspectives are reflected in deal valuation and governance discussions.
- Translate complex analyses into clear recommendations, executive-ready narratives, and decision options for senior leaders and governance forums, facilitating productive discussion around uncertainty, trade-offs, and strategic implications.
- Advance BD forecasting capabilities by sharing best practices, improving tools and processes, and helping create faster, more consistent, and audit-ready ways of working.
Qualifications
- Education and experience: 7+ years of relevant forecasting, market analytics, finance, or life sciences consulting experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or related industries; MBA or other advanced degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree in finance/accounting or business required.
- Forecasting and analytics skills: Experience building forecast models in Excel and forecasting platforms such as IQVIA Forecast Horizon; ability to develop and/or utilize patient-flow modeling approaches, craft robust assumptions, and prepare evidence-based forecast inputs from epidemiology, secondary data, market research, treatment dynamics, competitive profiles, and expert input. Familiar with key data sources used to substantiate forecast recommendations and demonstrated ability to clearly document forecast assumption logic and rationale. Familiarity with using and crafting Target Product Profiles (TPPs), establishing and aligning analytical business rules and market definitions, and leveraging claims data analytics is also highly desirable.
- Business and therapeutic area knowledge: Experience supporting strategic decision making in specialized therapeutic areas such as Neuroscience, Immunology, Oncology, or other complex markets is preferred; ability to apply data, assumptions, and market context effectively is critical.
- Communication and influence: Strong executive communication skills, including the ability to tailor messages by audience, translate complex quantitative analyses into recommendations and decision options, and influence stakeholders across functions and cultures without direct authority.
- Project leadership: Strong project management skills in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment, with the ability to prioritize multiple workstreams, communicate trade-offs, escalate risks appropriately, and deliver high-quality work under time pressure.

Tailor your resume to biopharma alliance work
AbbVie's Partnerships Managers typically work on licensing deals, co-promotion agreements, or R&D collaborations. Frame your experience around specific deal structures, therapeutic areas, or partner types rather than generic business development language.
Identify which AbbVie division is hiring
AbbVie hires Partnerships Managers across immunology, oncology, and neuroscience franchises. Targeting the right franchise with relevant therapeutic area experience narrows your competition and strengthens your fit before you even apply.
Confirm your visa category before the offer stage
AbbVie sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and Green Card pathways, but the right fit depends on your nationality and degree field. Knowing your category before negotiations means you can discuss timelines confidently rather than scrambling after an offer arrives.
Use Migrate Mate to find open sponsorship-confirmed roles
Not every Partnerships Manager posting on general job boards confirms visa sponsorship upfront. Use Migrate Mate to filter AbbVie roles verified for sponsorship, so you're applying to positions where your visa status won't become a late-stage obstacle.
Prepare for USCIS specialty occupation documentation early
For H-1B or E-3 petitions, AbbVie's legal team will need to demonstrate the Partnerships Manager role requires a specific bachelor's degree or higher. Gather your degree credentials, transcript translations if applicable, and any credential evaluation ahead of the offer timeline.
Align your start date to H-1B cap deadlines
If you need a new H-1B, USCIS registration opens in March for an October 1 start. AbbVie can file cap-exempt if you're transferring from another H-1B employer, which removes the lottery dependency and compresses the onboarding timeline significantly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AbbVie sponsor H-1B visas for Partnerships Managers?
Yes, AbbVie sponsors H-1B visas for Partnerships Manager roles. The position typically qualifies as a specialty occupation given the degree requirements in life sciences, business, or a related field. AbbVie's legal team handles the petition process, but you should confirm sponsorship availability directly during the offer stage, as it can vary by business unit and hiring timeline.
Which visa types does AbbVie commonly sponsor for Partnerships Manager roles?
AbbVie sponsors several visa categories for this function, including H-1B, H-1B1 visa for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, J-1 visa for exchange visitors, and employment-based Green Cards through EB-2 or EB-3 pathways. The right category depends on your citizenship and career stage.
What qualifications does AbbVie expect for Partnerships Manager positions?
AbbVie typically looks for a bachelor's degree or higher in life sciences, business, or a related field, combined with experience in biopharma deal-making, licensing, alliance management, or commercial strategy. Familiarity with contract structures like co-promotion or co-development agreements, and exposure to a specific therapeutic area such as immunology or oncology, strengthens a candidacy significantly.
How do I apply for Partnerships Manager jobs at AbbVie?
You can find and apply for Partnerships Manager roles at AbbVie through Migrate Mate, which lists open positions with confirmed visa sponsorship so you know upfront whether your immigration status is supported. From there, applications route through AbbVie's careers portal. Tailoring your application to the specific franchise or therapeutic area the role covers improves your chances of clearing the initial screening.
How do I plan my timeline when AbbVie is sponsoring my visa?
Timeline depends heavily on your visa category. E-3 and TN visas can move quickly, sometimes within weeks of an offer, since they don't require USCIS petition approval. H-1B transfers from an existing employer can start quickly too. New H-1B cap cases require registration in March and an October start. For Green Card sponsorship through PERM, plan for a multi-year process and discuss initiation timing with AbbVie's immigration team early.
