INTRODUCTION
Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest. The Checkout Product team is at the heart of this mission—powering Affirm’s core payment experience, frequently seen at merchant point of sale. This experience is distributed through direct merchant integrations and strategic platform partners, and is driven by a sophisticated, real-time, risk-based decisioning system spanning Identity, Fraud, Credit, and Pricing. We are looking for a Senior Director of Consumer Risk product to lead this critical surface area within Checkout. In this role, you will own the product vision, strategy, and execution across Credit, Pricing, and Fraud, enabling Affirm to grow responsibly while delivering best-in-class consumer and merchant experiences. Affirm’s proprietary underwriting is one of our greatest strengths. We only make money when consumers pay us back on time—aligning incentives and fundamentally reimagining how credit should work. As the leader of Consumer Risk product, you will help scale and evolve this system, balancing customer trust, merchant performance, and long-term business outcomes. This is a highly cross-functional, analytically rigorous, and commercially impactful role. You will lead and scale a team of Product Managers, partner deeply with Engineering, Machine Learning, Analytics, Risk, Finance, Legal, Design, and GTM teams, and influence senior leaders across the company.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own the end-to-end product vision, strategy, and execution for Consumer Risk within Checkout, encompassing Credit decisioning, Pricing, and Fraud prevention
- Translate Affirm’s mission into a clear product roadmap that balances growth, risk, customer trust, and platform scalability
- Lead and scale a team of Product Managers owning distinct Consumer Risk surface areas, fostering a culture of accountability, learning, and high performance
- Partner closely with Machine Learning, Analytics and Engineering to shape model-driven product experiences, including underwriting logic, pricing frameworks, fraud signals, and decisioning platforms
- Drive quantitative storytelling—using data, experiments, and modeling to inform strategy, influence stakeholders, and guide tradeoffs
- Champion a customer-first mindset, ensuring risk experiences are transparent, fair, and intuitive for consumers while delivering strong outcomes for merchants
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Risk, Finance, Legal, Compliance, Design, Marketing, and GTM teams to deliver cohesive, scalable solutions
- Set and own key performance metrics (e.g., approval rate, conversion, loss rate, unit economics, LTV, fraud outcomes, customer trust metrics) and hold teams accountable to results
- Navigate complex organizational dynamics and influence senior stakeholders, including the executive team, with clear articulation of strategy, tradeoffs, and impact
- Balance near-term execution with long-term platform investments, ensuring Consumer Risk capabilities scale with Affirm’s growth and partner ecosystem
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 12+ years of Product Management experience, including leadership roles on fast-paced teams driving responsible, sustainable growth
- Deep experience working with Credit, Pricing, and/or Fraud stakeholders, with a strong understanding of:
- Credit: underwriting tradeoffs, unit economics, loss management, regulatory considerations
- Pricing: risk-based pricing, margin optimization, experimentation, and fairness considerations
- Fraud: adversarial systems, real-time decisioning, false positive/negative tradeoffs, and customer trust
- Strong quantitative and analytical orientation—comfortable engaging in model-level discussions, using data to drive decisions, and translating complexity into clear narratives
- Experience building and scaling platform and decisioning products, not just surface-level UX
- Proven track record of managing and mentoring large, geographically distributed PM teams
- Commercially minded with a high-agency, bias-to-action mindset and comfort making hard tradeoffs in ambiguous environments
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across functions and levels
- Experience working in design-forward organizations that prioritize clarity, transparency, and high-quality user experiences
- A systems thinker who can balance short-term business impact with long-term scalability and technical health
- Fintech, payments, or risk-heavy consumer product experience is a strong plus

Frame your fintech BD credentials precisely
Affirm evaluates BD Directors on merchant partnerships, point-of-sale lending expansion, and enterprise deal cycles. Before applying, document specific deal sizes, partner categories, and revenue outcomes that map directly to buy-now-pay-later or installment finance contexts.
Identify Affirm's active partnership verticals first
Affirm concentrates BD hiring around retail, travel, and healthcare merchant categories. Research their public merchant announcements to understand which verticals are growing, then position your outreach and resume around those specific partnership channels.
Clarify your visa type early in recruiting
Affirm sponsors H-1B, TN, and F-1 OPT candidates, but each path has different employer filing timelines. If you're on OPT with an approaching expiration, surface that timeline to the recruiter before the offer stage to avoid delays in H-1B cap-subject filing.
Align your LCA timing with your start date
For H-1B transfers or new petitions, your employer files a Labor Condition Application with DOL before USCIS sees the petition. At director level, prevailing wage determinations can take longer to certify, so push for an offer letter that accounts for that lead time.
Use Migrate Mate to target Affirm BD openings strategically
Filter for Business Development Director roles at Affirm by visa type on Migrate Mate so you see only positions where sponsorship has been confirmed. This removes the guesswork of cold-applying to postings that don't explicitly address international candidates.
Prepare for Affirm's PERM timeline if pursuing permanence
If your goal extends to a Green Card through an EB-2 or EB-3 pathway, discuss PERM labor certification intent before accepting an offer. PERM recruitment requirements mean the process should start well before your H-1B's six-year limit approaches.

Find Business Development Director at Affirm JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Affirm sponsor H-1B visas for Business Development Directors?
Yes, Affirm sponsors H-1B visas for Business Development Director roles. Affirm has an established pattern of filing H-1B petitions for its business development function, including both cap-subject new filings and transfers for candidates already holding H-1B status with another employer. If you're mid-cycle on an existing H-1B, a transfer to Affirm is generally the faster path since it doesn't require waiting for the annual lottery.
How do I apply for Business Development Director jobs at Affirm?
Apply through Affirm's careers portal directly, or find current openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate. When applying, tailor your resume to Affirm's merchant partnership and consumer finance focus. Recruiters at Affirm typically screen for enterprise deal experience and familiarity with installment lending ecosystems, so surface those credentials prominently in your application materials.
Which visa types does Affirm commonly use for Business Development Director roles?
Affirm sponsors H-1B visas most commonly for this function, along with TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying professional categories. F-1 OPT and CPT are also supported, which is relevant for candidates transitioning from graduate programs in finance or business. Longer-term, Affirm has filed EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card petitions for business development hires moving toward permanent residence.
What qualifications does Affirm expect for Business Development Director candidates?
Affirm typically looks for experience in financial services, fintech, or payments, with a track record of owning enterprise or strategic partnerships end-to-end. A bachelor's degree in business, finance, or a related field is a baseline requirement. For specialty occupation purposes under an H-1B, the role must require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field, which Affirm's BD director positions generally satisfy given the financial services context.
How do I think about timing if I'm on OPT targeting a Business Development Director role at Affirm?
If you're on F-1 OPT, the H-1B cap-subject lottery runs once per year with a filing window in March and an October 1 start date. If your OPT expires before October, a STEM OPT extension of up to 24 months can bridge the gap, but you need to file the extension with USCIS before your current OPT expires. Start the Affirm recruiting process early enough that an offer can be in place before the March registration window opens.
