Align your degree to UT Health's specialty occupations
E-3 requires your degree field to directly match the role's requirements. At UT Health, clinical research, biomedical science, and public health positions carry clearly defined degree expectations. Cross-check your credentials against the posted job requirements before applying, not after receiving an offer.
Target departments with established international hiring
UT Health's research institutes and schools of public health and nursing regularly hire internationally trained professionals. Focus your applications on departments where grant-funded research roles exist, as these positions are more likely to have pre-approved sponsorship pathways and dedicated HR contacts familiar with E-3 filings.
Request an LCA before your start date
Your employer must file and receive a certified Labor Condition Application from DOL before you can attend your consular interview. At large institutions like UT Health, HR timelines vary by department. Confirm the LCA is in progress within two weeks of receiving your offer to avoid delays at the consulate.
Verify your prevailing wage using OFLC Wage Search
UT Health's offered salary must meet or exceed the DOL prevailing wage for your role's occupation code and Houston metro area. Run your job title through OFLC Wage Search before your interview to confirm your offer is compliant and to flag any discrepancy with HR early in the process.
Use Migrate Mate to confirm your role qualifies for E-3
Not every university role meets the specialty occupation threshold for E-3. Before engaging UT Health's HR on sponsorship, search Migrate Mate to see the institution's E-3 filing history by occupation and confirm that roles matching your background have qualified for sponsorship in practice.
Prepare your O*NET occupation code before your interview
Consular officers assess whether your role meets the specialty occupation standard. Identifying your position's O*NET occupation profile in advance helps you articulate why your specific UT Health role requires a specialized degree, which is the core question at the E-3 consular interview.
UTHealth Houston E-3 Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston sponsor E-3 visas?
Yes, UT Health sponsors E-3 visas for qualified Australian nationals. The institution has filed E-3 Labor Condition Applications across research, clinical, and academic departments. Sponsorship is handled through its central HR and international hiring office, and availability depends on the specific role and department budget.
Which roles and departments at UT Health typically receive E-3 sponsorship?
E-3 sponsorship at UT Health is most common in research-intensive and clinically specialized roles, including biomedical research positions, public health analyst roles, and faculty or postdoctoral appointments within its schools of medicine, nursing, and public health. Roles requiring a directly related bachelor's degree or higher are strongest candidates for E-3 eligibility.
How do I start the E-3 application process at UT Health?
Once you receive a written offer, UT Health's HR team initiates the Labor Condition Application through DOL. After LCA certification, you complete the DS-160, pay the MRV fee, and attend a consular interview in Australia. Migrate Mate can help you prepare documentation and confirm your role meets the specialty occupation standard before your interview.
How long does the E-3 sponsorship process take at UT Health?
DOL typically certifies an LCA within seven business days of submission. After that, consular appointment availability in Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth determines your overall timeline. Most applicants complete the full process within four to eight weeks of receiving their offer, though department-level HR response times at UT Health can affect how quickly the LCA is filed.
What should I know about E-3 renewal if I stay at UT Health long-term?
E-3 visas are granted in two-year increments with no statutory limit on renewals, provided you maintain qualifying employment. At UT Health, renewal typically requires a new LCA reflecting your current salary and role. USCIS processes E-3 extensions as a change of status if you remain in the U.S., or you can renew at the consulate during travel back to Australia.
What is the prevailing wage for E-3 sponsorship at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston?
E-3 employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, determined when they file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, ensuring Australian hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
