About Gusto
At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff — payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR — so owners can focus on their craft and their customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve.
All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) — because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.
AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.
About the Role:
We're looking for seasoned full-stack software engineers to join the teams behind Gusto's customer-facing products — the features and experiences that small business owners and their employees rely on every day.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll operate across the full product lifecycle: shaping features from early spec and design through to launch and long-term iteration. That means writing clean frontend code, designing and building reliable backend APIs, influencing product direction, and taking ownership of what happens after a feature ships.
If you're drawn to work that combines technical craft with real-world impact — helping power the livelihoods of millions using Gusto products — join us!
Here's what you'll do day-to-day:
- Design, build, and test Gusto core products such as Payroll, Benefits, HR, Retirement, Gusto Money, Gusto Solo, and Gusto Pro, among others
- Mentor other engineers to help solve some of the hardest technical problems out there in very complex domains and at a large scale
- Help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications in the world
- Collaborate with our Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering teams to understand customer pain points, come up with solutions, and then prototype, iterate, and launch daily
- Build products that our customers genuinely love
Here's what we're looking for:
- Successful applicants typically have 8+ years of software development experience
- Experience building scalable solutions that eliminate customer pain; passion for creating memorable experiences for customers
- Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new product capabilities
- Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, applying and sharing best practices to evaluate and scale AI use safely across teams
- Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and make measurable customer impact at scale
- Experience with large scale refactors, performance and reliability issues, and a strong sense of ownership over all aspects of your product area
- Ability to mentor engineers to maximize their performance and impact
Please note that a two day travel to a Gusto office for onboarding is required for this position. If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please share with your recruiter.
Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $163,000–$204,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and $197,000–$247,000 for San Francisco & New York. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.
Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.
When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.

Align your stack with Gusto's infrastructure
Gusto's engineering teams work on payroll processing, tax compliance, and benefits APIs. Highlighting experience with distributed systems, financial data pipelines, or regulated-industry backend work signals fit before the conversation about sponsorship even begins.
Clarify your visa type before the offer
Gusto sponsors multiple visa categories, so the offer stage moves faster when you've already identified which pathway applies to you. Bring your visa type and current status to your recruiter screen, not your final interview.
Prepare your degree equivalency documents early
H-1B specialty occupation requires a qualifying bachelor's degree in a related field. If your credentials are from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before you receive an offer, not after.
Target Gusto's product engineering teams specifically
Gusto's accounting and payroll product surface is where the heaviest engineering investment sits. Roles tied to tax engine development or compliance automation tend to have clearer specialty occupation footing for H-1B purposes than generalist positions.
Understand PERM timing if you want permanent residence
Gusto sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards, but PERM labor certification with DOL typically takes 12 to 18 months before an I-140 petition can be filed. Factor that into your planning if your H-1B clock is running.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open Software Developer roles
Gusto posts Software Developer roles across multiple job boards, making it easy to miss sponsorship-eligible positions. Use Migrate Mate to filter for Gusto openings that are actively hiring international candidates, so you're applying to the right positions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Gusto sponsor H-1B visas for Software Developers?
Yes, Gusto sponsors H-1B visas for Software Developer roles. The role needs to qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning it typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Gusto works with immigration counsel to file H-1B petitions, and the process generally begins after a formal offer is extended.
Which visa types does Gusto commonly sponsor for Software Developer roles?
Gusto sponsors H-1B and E-3 visas for nonimmigrant work authorization, covering both the standard H-1B cap and the E-3 pathway available to Australian citizens. For permanent residence, Gusto has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards through the PERM labor certification process with DOL. The right pathway depends on your nationality, current status, and career timeline.
How do I apply for Software Developer jobs at Gusto?
Applications go through Gusto's careers page, where roles are listed by team and location. Most Software Developer positions require a technical screen followed by a multi-stage engineering interview covering system design and coding. You can also find and filter sponsorship-eligible Gusto Software Developer roles directly on Migrate Mate, which surfaces positions where international hiring is expected.
What qualifications does Gusto expect for Software Developer roles?
Gusto's Software Developer roles typically expect proficiency in backend or full-stack development, with experience in languages like Ruby, Go, or Python. Given Gusto's focus on payroll and financial compliance software, familiarity with regulated data environments, API design, or fintech infrastructure is a practical differentiator. A qualifying bachelor's degree is also required for H-1B sponsorship eligibility.
How does the visa sponsorship timeline work for a Software Developer offer at Gusto?
Once an offer is extended, Gusto's legal team initiates the visa process, which varies by category. H-1B petitions are tied to the annual cap with an April 1 filing window, so timing relative to the lottery matters. E-3 visas for Australian citizens move faster, with consular processing often completed in four to eight weeks. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship runs on a separate, longer track.
