Tips for Finding Adjunct Faculty Jobs at Hofstra University
Align Your Credentials to Specialty Occupation Standards
For H-1B sponsorship, your degree must directly relate to the subject you'll teach. A marketing adjunct role requires a marketing or business degree, not just a general MBA. Document the field-to-role connection clearly in your application materials.
Target Departments Hiring in Your Discipline
Hofstra's 37 open Adjunct Faculty listings span multiple colleges and departments. Apply to the specific department that matches your graduate-level training. Hiring decisions at universities sit with department chairs, not central HR, so direct outreach matters.
Start OPT or STEM OPT Paperwork Well Before Your Start Date
OPT authorization can take up to 90 days to process through USCIS. If you're relying on F-1 OPT to cover your first semester, submit your I-20 endorsement request to Hofstra's international student office at least three months before your intended start date.
Ask HR Specifically About H-1B Cap-Exempt Filing
As an accredited university, Hofstra qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer. That means they can file an H-1B petition for you at any time of year without waiting for the April lottery. Confirm this directly with Hofstra's HR or legal team before accepting an offer.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open Adjunct Roles with Sponsorship History
Browsing general job boards won't show you which listings come with real sponsorship intent. Use Migrate Mate to filter Adjunct Faculty openings at Hofstra University by visa type so you're only spending time on roles where sponsorship is already on the table.
Prepare a PERM-Ready Employment History Before Negotiating an Offer
If your goal is an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card through Hofstra, the DOL's PERM process requires documenting that no qualified U.S. workers were available. Having a clean, detailed employment history and academic credentials organized upfront speeds up the attorney review stage significantly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Hofstra University sponsor H-1B visas for Adjunct Facultys?
Yes. Hofstra University is an accredited institution of higher education, which makes it a cap-exempt H-1B employer. That means Hofstra can file an H-1B petition on your behalf at any point in the year, without entering the annual lottery. Your role must qualify as a specialty occupation, which for Adjunct Faculty typically means a direct connection between your graduate-level degree and the subject you're hired to teach.
How do I apply for Adjunct Faculty jobs at Hofstra University?
Applications go through Hofstra's official careers portal, where listings are organized by college and department. Adjunct roles are typically posted by individual departments, so filtering by academic unit gives you the most relevant results. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse Hofstra's open Adjunct Faculty positions filtered by visa sponsorship type, which helps you prioritize roles where international hiring is already expected.
Which visa types are commonly used for Adjunct Faculty roles at Hofstra University?
Hofstra sponsors H-1B visas for Adjunct Faculty, which is the most common path for ongoing academic employment. F-1 OPT and CPT are options for recent graduates still within their authorization window. TN visas apply to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying academic positions. For longer-term immigration goals, Hofstra also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for eligible faculty members.
What qualifications does Hofstra University expect for Adjunct Faculty roles?
Most Adjunct Faculty positions at Hofstra require at minimum a master's degree in a field directly related to the course being taught. Doctoral credentials are often preferred for upper-division undergraduate and graduate courses. Practical industry experience can supplement academic credentials in professional programs like business, law, or health sciences, but the degree-to-discipline match is what USCIS evaluates for H-1B specialty occupation purposes.
How do I plan my immigration timeline around an Adjunct Faculty offer at Hofstra?
If you're starting on F-1 OPT, account for up to 90 days of USCIS processing time and request your updated I-20 from Hofstra's international office as early as possible. For H-1B transfers from another employer, Hofstra can file immediately given its cap-exempt status, and you're generally authorized to begin work once USCIS receives the petition. For PERM-based Green Card sponsorship, expect the DOL process to run 12 to 18 months before an I-140 petition can be filed.
