Tailor your academic credentials for U.S. standards
U.S. universities evaluate foreign degrees differently than USCIS does. Get your transcripts evaluated by a NACES-accredited credential evaluator before applying, so Hofstra's faculty search committees see an equivalency that aligns with their appointment criteria.
Target departments with active faculty searches
Hofstra posts Assistant Professor openings across multiple colleges, including Zarb School of Business and the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. Monitor the Hofstra careers portal directly, and use Migrate Mate to filter for open roles that actively sponsor visas.
Understand how universities initiate H-1B filings
At universities like Hofstra, the sponsoring department works with the Office of General Counsel or an immigration attorney to file the H-1B petition. Ask during the offer stage which internal office manages the process and what documentation they need from you upfront.
Position yourself for PERM-based permanent residence early
Assistant Professor roles at universities frequently qualify for PERM labor certification leading to an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card. Raise the topic of long-term sponsorship during negotiations, not after your H-1B is filed, so both parties can plan around DOL processing timelines.
Align your OPT or TN status with the academic hiring cycle
Hofstra's faculty hiring typically concludes in spring for fall start dates. If you're on F-1 OPT or TN status, confirm your work authorization covers the full onboarding period and that a cap-subject H-1B petition can be filed in time for the October 1 start.
Prepare your research and teaching portfolio strategically
Hofstra values candidates who can demonstrate scholarly activity alongside teaching effectiveness. Compile publications, syllabi, and student evaluations into a single packet before interviews, since these documents also support the specialty occupation evidence required in an H-1B petition.

Find Assistant Professor at Hofstra University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Hofstra University sponsor H-1B visas for Assistant Professors?
Yes, Hofstra University sponsors H-1B visas for Assistant Professors. Faculty roles at universities qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS guidelines because they require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Hofstra's legal or immigration office typically manages the H-1B petition process on behalf of the hiring department once an offer is extended.
How do I apply for Assistant Professor jobs at Hofstra University?
Applications are submitted through Hofstra's official careers portal, where each posting lists the required materials, usually a cover letter, CV, research statement, teaching statement, and reference contacts. You can also browse open Assistant Professor positions at Hofstra that include visa sponsorship through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by sponsorship type so you can target the right openings faster.
Which visa types are commonly used for Assistant Professor roles at Hofstra University?
H-1B is the most common visa for full-time Assistant Professors at U.S. universities, including Hofstra. F-1 OPT and CPT can bridge the gap for recent graduates, and TN status is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying academic roles. For long-term faculty, Hofstra may also support EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM labor certification.
What qualifications are expected for Assistant Professor roles at Hofstra University?
Most Assistant Professor postings at Hofstra require a terminal degree in the relevant field, typically a Ph.D., J.D., or M.D., depending on the department. Many searches also expect a demonstrated research agenda, prior teaching experience, and evidence of publications or scholarly work. Specific requirements vary by college, so reviewing each job posting carefully is essential.
How do I time my visa sponsorship around Hofstra's hiring process?
Hofstra's faculty hiring cycle generally concludes in spring, with positions starting in late August or early September. If you need H-1B sponsorship, USCIS cap-subject petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start, which can create a timing gap. Clarify with Hofstra's HR or immigration office whether premium processing is available to close that window.
