Tips for Finding Professor Jobs at Hofstra University
Align Your Credentials With U.S. Academic Standards
Hofstra evaluates faculty candidates on terminal degrees, research output, and teaching experience. Have your foreign transcripts evaluated by a NACES-recognized credential service before applying so your qualifications read clearly to a U.S. hiring committee.
Target Departments With Active Faculty Searches
Professor openings at Hofstra are posted by department and often tied to specific research areas or accreditation needs. Search Hofstra's careers portal by college or school to find searches aligned with your field before the application deadline closes.
Understand How Tenure-Track Affects Sponsorship Timing
Tenure-track offers typically come with a multi-year employment commitment, which strengthens the employer's case for H-1B sponsorship. Adjunct or visiting roles may not trigger sponsorship, so clarify the appointment type during your initial conversations with the hiring department.
Ask About the LCA Filing Early in Negotiations
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before USCIS can process your H-1B petition. Raise the LCA timeline with Hofstra's HR team as soon as you receive an offer so your start date aligns with the petition approval window.
Prepare for PERM if Permanent Residency Is Your Goal
Universities frequently sponsor EB-2 or EB-3 Green Cards through PERM for long-term faculty. The PERM process requires DOL-supervised recruitment documentation that can take a year or more, so start that conversation with Hofstra's HR team well before your current status expires.
Browse Open Roles on Migrate Mate Before Applying
Professor positions at Hofstra that include visa sponsorship are searchable on Migrate Mate. Filter by role and sponsorship type to confirm which openings are actively accepting international applicants before investing time in a full application package.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Hofstra University sponsor H-1B visas for Professors?
Yes, Hofstra University sponsors H-1B visas for Professor roles. Faculty positions, particularly tenure-track appointments, meet the specialty occupation standard USCIS requires for H-1B eligibility. Hofstra's HR and legal teams manage the petition process, including the required Labor Condition Application filed with the DOL before the H-1B petition is submitted to USCIS.
Which visa types are commonly used for Professor roles at Hofstra University?
H-1B is the most common visa for full-time faculty at Hofstra. For international graduates already in the U.S., F-1 OPT or CPT can bridge to a faculty role while sponsorship is arranged. Canadian and Mexican nationals may use TN visa status for certain academic positions. Long-term faculty often pursue a Green Card through EB-2 or EB-3 PERM sponsorship.
What qualifications does Hofstra University expect for Professor positions?
Most Professor roles at Hofstra require a terminal degree in the relevant discipline, typically a Ph.D. or equivalent. Teaching experience, a record of scholarly research or publication, and demonstrated expertise in your specialty area are standard expectations. Some professional schools may accept significant industry credentials alongside or in place of a traditional academic research background.
How do I apply for Professor jobs at Hofstra University?
Applications are submitted through Hofstra's official careers portal, where faculty openings are listed by college and department. Each posting specifies required materials, which typically include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching philosophy statement, and writing samples. You can also find Professor roles at Hofstra that offer visa sponsorship by browsing listings on Migrate Mate, which filters positions by sponsorship type.
How do I plan my timeline for visa sponsorship at a university like Hofstra?
H-1B petitions for cap-subject applicants must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start date, which means your offer and LCA need to be in place months earlier. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your OPT expiration date and whether a STEM extension applies. Starting sponsorship conversations with Hofstra HR as early as the offer stage gives the process the time it needs.
