Computer Science Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a computer science professional in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania does not require a state-issued license to work in computer science, so the path runs through education and employer-recognized credentials. Most hiring managers expect at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited institution. Pennsylvania has strong programs at Penn State, Carnegie Mellon, Drexel, and Temple. Completing internships with Philadelphia or Pittsburgh employers and earning cloud or cybersecurity certifications strengthens your candidacy considerably.
Which companies hire computer sciences in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania computer science roles are posted by Carnegie Mellon University, Geneva College, and Propel Schools and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pennsylvania's mix of defense contractors, financial technology firms, large university research centers, and healthcare systems means openings appear across a wider range of industries than in most states.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most computer science jobs?
Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Exton account for the most computer science openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia leads due to its concentration of financial technology companies, healthcare networks, and Comcast's headquarters, while Pittsburgh's strength in robotics, autonomous systems, and university-affiliated research at Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh sustains its own sizable tech hiring market.
Are there remote computer science jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 50% of computer science openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how broadly software and data work can be done off-site. Roles in software development, data engineering, and cloud architecture tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while positions tied to on-premises infrastructure or government-cleared facilities generally require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a computer science professional in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or co-op conversion, which large Pennsylvania employers like Comcast, Lockheed Martin, and UPMC actively use to build their early-career pipeline. Drexel's co-op program and Penn State's career placement network are well-connected to these employers. Candidates without prior employment can target junior developer, QA analyst, or IT support roles as lateral entry points, and a strong GitHub portfolio or completion of a recognized cloud certification gives new applicants a measurable edge.
Where can I find and apply to computer science jobs in Pennsylvania?
You can find and apply to computer science jobs in Pennsylvania on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring in the state right now. Search for roles that match your skills and experience level, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
