Computer Science Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a computer science professional in New York?
Most computer science roles in New York require a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, and there is no state-issued license required to practice. Employers in New York typically screen candidates through technical interviews covering algorithms, system design, and coding exercises. Certifications from vendors such as AWS, Google, or Microsoft can strengthen a candidacy, particularly for infrastructure and cloud roles common in New York's finance and media sectors.
How much do computer sciences make in New York?
Computer sciences in New York earn a median of about $96,450 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $51,180 for the lowest 10% to over $170,200 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire computer sciences in New York?
Employers hiring computer sciences in New York right now include Zeta Charter Schools, Exponent, and New York Institute of Technology, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of financial services firms, media companies, and enterprise tech offices means hiring is distributed across a wide range of industries rather than concentrated in a single sector.
Which New York cities have the most computer science jobs?
New York, Syracuse, and Old Westbury have the most computer science openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its concentration of financial institutions, advertising technology firms, and large tech company offices, while Buffalo and Albany see steady demand from state government technology initiatives and regional healthcare and university systems that maintain in-house engineering teams.
Are there remote computer science jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 0% of computer science openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the work translates to distributed teams. Software engineering, data science, and cybersecurity roles are the most likely to be offered fully remote, while roles requiring on-site infrastructure access or regulated financial systems tend to require at least a hybrid schedule.
How can I get hired as a computer science professional in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an associate or junior developer role, which large New York employers and staffing firms regularly post for candidates with a relevant degree and a demonstrable project portfolio. JPMorgan Chase, Bloomberg, and New York-area health systems run structured new-graduate programs that onboard candidates into rotational or junior engineering tracks. A strong GitHub portfolio, open-source contributions, or a capstone project from a New York university program can substitute for professional experience in early screening rounds.
Where can I find and apply to computer science jobs in New York?
