Risk Management Lead Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a risk management lead in New York?
Most risk management leads in New York start with a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business, or a quantitative field, then build several years of experience in risk analysis or compliance. New York does not require a state-issued license for this role, but certifications like the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) or Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) carry significant weight with New York financial services and insurance employers. Familiarity with New York State Department of Financial Services guidance accelerates advancement.
How much do risk management leads make in New York?
Risk management leads in New York earn a median of about $136,830 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $84,550 for the lowest 10% to over $220,260 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire risk management leads in New York?
Employers hiring risk management leads in New York right now include Citi, JPMorganChase, and New York Life, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of global banks, insurance carriers, and large healthcare systems means demand is consistent throughout the year, particularly among firms navigating regulatory requirements tied to the New York State Department of Financial Services.
Which New York cities have the most risk management lead jobs?
The cities with the most risk management lead openings in New York are New York, Buffalo, and Getzville. New York City dominates because it is home to the headquarters and major operations of the country's largest financial institutions, insurance companies, and hospital networks, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady openings through regional bank operations, state agency risk functions, and large healthcare organizations anchored in those metros.
Are there remote risk management lead jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many senior roles, since risk management leads work primarily with data, reports, and cross-functional teams rather than on-site operations. About 23% of risk management lead openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting employer flexibility built up across the financial and professional services sectors. The most remote-compatible parts of the role include policy development, reporting, and vendor risk review, while regulatory liaison work and board presentations tend to require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a risk management lead in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a risk analyst or compliance associate role at a New York financial services firm, insurance company, or large healthcare system, then building toward a lead title over several years. Major New York employers including large banks and hospital networks run rotational analyst programs and associate-level risk pathways designed for candidates without direct lead experience. Earning the FRM designation or completing a graduate certificate in risk management from a New York university strengthens an application considerably when experience is limited.
