Construction Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a construction worker in South Dakota?
Most construction roles in South Dakota begin with a high school diploma or GED followed by a registered apprenticeship through a local union or contractor association. The South Dakota Contractors Board oversees licensing for contractors and specialty trades, and electricians must obtain a state-issued license through the South Dakota State Electrical Commission. Many workers enter through apprenticeship programs affiliated with the Associated General Contractors of South Dakota or local union halls in Sioux Falls and Rapid City.
Which companies hire constructions in South Dakota?
South Dakota construction roles are posted by Anco, Journey, and Quanta Services and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's market includes a strong mix of regional general contractors, utility builders, and highway construction firms that hire year-round across the state's major metros and rural project sites.
Which South Dakota cities have the most construction jobs?
Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and Watertown are the South Dakota cities with the most construction openings right now. Sioux Falls drives the largest share of demand as the state's commercial and residential growth center, while Rapid City supports steady work tied to Black Hills tourism infrastructure and federal project spending, and Aberdeen draws hiring from agricultural facility construction and regional commercial development.
Are there remote construction jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, but they're rare. Construction work is fundamentally hands-on and site-based, so most roles require a physical presence on the job. About 29% of construction openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions are almost entirely in project management, estimating, or construction administration rather than field trades.
How can I get hired as a construction worker in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a pre-apprenticeship or registered apprenticeship program, which major South Dakota contractors and union halls in Sioux Falls and Rapid City run specifically for candidates without prior field experience. Applying for laborer or helper roles at general contractors like Journey Group or Henry Carlson Company is a common starting move, and earning an OSHA 10 card before applying gives candidates a visible edge over others at the same experience level.
Where can I find and apply to construction jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to construction jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
