Maintenance Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a maintenance worker in South Dakota?
Most maintenance roles in South Dakota require a high school diploma or GED plus hands-on experience gained through vocational training, an apprenticeship, or on-the-job work. South Dakota does not require a state-issued general maintenance license, but roles involving electrical work may require a South Dakota journeyman or master electrician license issued through the South Dakota State Electrical Commission. Trade programs at Lake Area Technical College and Southeast Technical College are well-regarded pathways into the field.
Which companies hire maintenance workers in South Dakota?
Companies currently hiring maintenances in South Dakota include Walmart, NAES Corporation, and Schwan's Company, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's mix of large healthcare systems, agricultural processing facilities, and government infrastructure creates consistent year-round demand across the state.
Which South Dakota cities have the most maintenance jobs?
Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and Pierre account for the most maintenance openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls leads because of its concentration of hospitals, financial services campuses, and manufacturing employers, while Rapid City draws demand from tourism infrastructure, regional government facilities, and healthcare, and smaller hubs like Aberdeen generate steady openings tied to agricultural processing plants and school districts.
Are there remote maintenance jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, but they're rare. Maintenance work is largely hands-on and tied to physical facilities, so most openings require on-site presence. About 0% of maintenance openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions typically involve maintenance planning, computerized maintenance management system coordination, or facilities administration rather than direct equipment work.
How can I get hired as a maintenance worker in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a maintenance helper or custodial technician role at a large employer and cross-training into skilled maintenance work. Sanford Health and Avera Health both hire facilities support staff and move people internally into maintenance technician roles. Completing a certificate program in HVAC or electrical at Lake Area Technical College strengthens a candidate's profile significantly, and an EPA 608 certification for refrigerants is an affordable credential that gives applicants a concrete edge over unlicensed candidates.
Where can I find and apply to maintenance jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to maintenance jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
