HVAC Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a hvac in South Dakota?
In South Dakota, hvac technicians working independently or pulling permits typically need a state-issued Plumbing and Heating Contractor license, overseen by the South Dakota State Plumbing Commission. The path generally starts with completing an accredited HVAC program at a technical institute such as Lake Area Technical College or Mitchell Technical College, followed by an apprenticeship, on-the-job hours, and passing the required state exam before applying for licensure.
Which companies hire hvacs in South Dakota?
South Dakota hvac roles are posted by Johnson Controls, Schwan's Company, and Aire Serv and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Large healthcare systems, regional mechanical contractors, and municipal facilities management departments are consistently among the steadiest sources of full-time hvac openings across the state.
Which South Dakota cities have the most hvac jobs?
Sioux Falls, Madison, and Brandon are the South Dakota cities with the most hvac openings. Sioux Falls leads because of its concentration of healthcare campuses, commercial construction, and corporate facilities, while Rapid City draws demand from tourism infrastructure and Black Hills regional development, and Aberdeen's agricultural processing and municipal buildings create a reliable base of maintenance and installation work.
Are there remote hvac jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of hvac openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most hvac work. The roles that do offer remote flexibility tend to be in building automation system monitoring, HVAC sales and estimating, or project management positions that don't require daily on-site installation work.
How can I get hired as a hvac in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is enrolling in a registered apprenticeship through the South Dakota Associated Builders and Contractors or a local mechanical contractor who partners with Lake Area Technical College or Mitchell Technical College. Employers in Sioux Falls and Rapid City regularly bring on apprentices and helpers for commercial projects, and candidates who hold an EPA Section 608 certification before applying stand out even without field experience. Adjacent roles like facilities maintenance technician or refrigeration helper are common lateral entry points.
Where can I find and apply to hvac jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to hvac jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring across the state. Search the listings, find the roles that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
