Data Center Technician Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data center technician in South Dakota?
The most direct path is completing an associate degree or technical certificate in information technology or networking at a South Dakota institution such as Southeast Technical College, Lake Area Technical College, or Western Dakota Technical College. South Dakota does not require a state-issued license specific to data center technicians, but employers consistently expect CompTIA A+ or Network+ certification. Completing an internship or lab-based program strengthens a candidate's profile considerably.
How much do data center technicians make in South Dakota?
Data center technicians in South Dakota earn a median of about $59,700 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,770 for the lowest 10% to over $76,110 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data center technicians in South Dakota?
South Dakota data center technician roles are posted by The Bancorp, Pathward, and Good Samaritan and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's financial services and healthcare sectors, anchored in Sioux Falls, drive a consistent share of these openings year-round.
Which South Dakota cities have the most data center technician jobs?
Sioux Falls, Pierre, and North Sioux City account for the largest concentration of data center technician openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls dominates because it hosts the state's largest financial institutions, regional healthcare systems, and corporate data operations, while Rapid City and Pierre draw openings from state government IT infrastructure and the energy and telecommunications sectors that serve western South Dakota.
Are there remote data center technician jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, but they're rare. Data center technician work is fundamentally hands-on, requiring physical access to hardware, cabling, and server environments. About 91% of data center technician openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those tend to involve remote monitoring, ticketing, or NOC-style coordination rather than physical infrastructure work.
How can I get hired as a data center technician in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is completing a technical program at Southeast Technical College or Lake Area Technical College and applying to entry-level IT support or help desk roles at Sioux Falls-area employers, which frequently serve as a direct pipeline into data center operations teams. Lateral moves from desktop support technician or field service technician positions are common. Earning CompTIA A+ certification before applying gives candidates a measurable edge over those without any credential.
Where can I find and apply to data center technician jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to data center technician jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current South Dakota openings from employers hiring now. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and location, and apply directly to each one.
