Design Project Manager Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a design project manager in Maryland?
Most design project managers in Maryland enter the role through a bachelor's degree in graphic design, architecture, industrial design, or a related field, then build project management credentials by earning a PMP or CAPM certification through the Project Management Institute. Maryland's large federal contracting sector often requires candidates to have or be eligible for a security clearance. Employers in architecture and construction may also value familiarity with LEED credentialing, which is administered through the U.S. Green Building Council.
How much do design project managers make in Maryland?
Design project managers in Maryland earn a median of about $104,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,890 for the lowest 10% to over $167,040 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire design project managers in Maryland?
Companies currently hiring design project managers in Maryland include SOLTESZ, Johns Hopkins Health System, and AECOM, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Maryland's concentration of federal agencies and defense contractors means many openings sit with large systems integrators and design consultancies serving government clients.
Which Maryland cities have the most design project manager jobs?
Baltimore, Lanham, and Laurel account for the most design project manager openings in Maryland. Baltimore anchors demand through its architecture firms, healthcare systems, and university campuses, while Bethesda and the Montgomery County corridor attract openings tied to federal agencies, defense contractors, and technology consultancies operating near the D.C. metro.
Are there remote design project manager jobs in Maryland?
Yes, and more than many fields, particularly for digital and UX-focused roles. About 83% of design project manager openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how common screen-based collaboration has become in this discipline. Work involving physical site visits, architecture, or hands-on production tends to require an on-site presence, while digital product and brand strategy roles are the most remote-accessible.
How can I get hired as a design project manager in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is starting as a design coordinator or junior project manager within a mid-size Maryland architecture firm or creative agency in Baltimore, then building toward a full PM role over one to two years. Employers like Perkins+Will and federal consulting firms in the Bethesda area occasionally bring on associate-level candidates through rotational programs. A strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end ownership of even small projects, combined with a CAPM certification, gives candidates without years of experience a measurable edge over those without credentials.
Where can I find and apply to design project manager jobs in Maryland?
