Project Program Manager Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project program manager in Maryland?
The most reliable path in Maryland is to earn a bachelor's degree in business, engineering, or information systems, then pursue Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute, which Maryland employers treat as a near-universal benchmark. Maryland has no state-issued license specific to project or program managers, so hiring decisions turn on that credential, demonstrated experience managing cross-functional teams, and in defense-heavy markets, eligibility for a federal security clearance.
How much do project program managers make in Maryland?
Project program managers in Maryland earn a median of about $104,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,890 for the lowest 10% to over $167,040 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project program managers in Maryland?
Companies currently hiring project program managers in Maryland include Adams Communication & Engineering Technology, Marriott International, and CHARLES COUNTY GOVERNMENT, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Maryland's concentration of federal agencies and defense primes means that government contracting firms and major health systems are among the steadiest sources of program management openings in the state year-round.
Which Maryland cities have the most project program manager jobs?
Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Bethesda, and La Plata account for the largest share of project program manager openings in Maryland. The Baltimore-Washington corridor drives most of this volume, with Bethesda and Rockville anchored by federal agencies, defense contractors, and NIH-adjacent organizations, while Baltimore itself generates strong demand through its major hospital systems and state government offices.
Are there remote project program manager jobs in Maryland?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 100% of project program manager openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, reflecting how much of the work centers on coordination, documentation, and stakeholder communication rather than on-site oversight. The roles most likely to be fully remote are in commercial IT program management, while defense and healthcare positions more often require at least some on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a project program manager in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a project coordinator or junior program analyst role, which large Maryland employers such as Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, and major Baltimore health systems use as a pipeline for developing program managers internally. Pursuing a Certified Associate in Project Management credential from the Project Management Institute demonstrates commitment before you have years of experience. Lateral moves from business analyst, scrum master, or government contract specialist roles are common pathways in Maryland's defense and federal IT sectors.
Where can I find and apply to project program manager jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to project program manager jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
