Design Project Manager Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a design project manager in New York?
Most design project managers in New York enter the field with a bachelor's degree in graphic design, interior design, architecture, or a closely related discipline, then build up experience coordinating projects in a studio, agency, or in-house creative team. New York does not require a state-issued license for this role, but employers across the city consistently favor candidates who hold a PMP credential or have completed a recognized project management program. A strong portfolio of managed projects carries significant weight in New York's competitive creative market.
How much do design project managers make in New York?
Design project managers in New York earn a median of about $121,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,580 for the lowest 10% to over $192,160 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire design project managers in New York?
Employers hiring design project managers in New York right now include Barton & Loguidice, LiRo-Hill, and Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New York's concentration of global advertising networks, architecture firms, and in-house creative departments at major corporations makes it one of the deepest hiring markets for this role in the country.
Which New York cities have the most design project manager jobs?
New York, Albany, and Rochester account for the largest share of design project manager openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its dense cluster of advertising agencies, architecture studios, fashion houses, and tech companies with in-house design functions, while Buffalo and Albany generate openings through regional architecture firms, healthcare system rebranding projects, and state government creative initiatives.
Are there remote design project manager jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many creative roles, since much of the coordination work happens through digital tools rather than on a job site. About 44% of design project manager openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the role's strong adoption of distributed workflows. The parts of the job most commonly done remotely include client communication, timeline management, and design review cycles, while vendor walkthroughs or production oversight often require an in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a design project manager in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into the role from an adjacent position such as design coordinator, production artist, or project coordinator within a New York agency or in-house studio. Large New York employers in advertising and architecture, including global holding companies and mid-size firms in the Garment District and Midtown, regularly hire associates to support senior project managers and grow into the role. Completing a PMP preparation course, building a portfolio of even small-scale managed projects, and earning proficiency in tools like Asana or Monday.com all strengthen a candidate's case noticeably.
Where can I find and apply to design project manager jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to design project manager jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your background and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
