Frame your credentials for U.S. specialty occupation
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 purposes. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before applying, consular officers use it to confirm your degree meets the specialty occupation threshold.
Target employers with active federal contracts
Consulting firms, think tanks, and nonprofits holding federal contracts file LCAs regularly and understand the E-3 process. Search DOL's FLAG portal for certified LCAs under SOC code 11-1011 or 19-3094 to identify organisations that have already sponsored policy roles.
Address dual intent directly in your application
Public policy roles often attract candidates with long-term U.S. ambitions, and consular officers will probe for immigrant intent. Prepare a clear narrative that shows strong ties to Australia and a defined scope for your U.S. role before your interview.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the LCA
The LCA must be DOL-certified before your consulate appointment, and errors in the prevailing wage or job duties sections cause delays. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so your offer-to-appointment timeline stays on track.
Negotiate E-3 filing costs into your offer
Unlike H-1B, the E-3 has no employer-side petition fee to USCIS, which makes sponsorship cheaper and faster for employers. Use that angle when discussing relocation packages, most policy employers will absorb the LCA and consular fees once they understand the cost difference.
Verify your job description meets specialty occupation
A Public Policy Manager title alone won't satisfy the E-3 specialty occupation test if the role description accepts any bachelor's degree. Confirm with your employer that the posted duties and degree requirements are specific to public policy, political science, or a directly related discipline.

Find Public Policy Manager JobsPublic Policy Manager E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Public Policy Manager jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search Public Policy Manager roles filtered by E-3 visa sponsorship. Because the E-3 doesn't require a lottery, employers face far less friction than with H-1B, so more policy-focused organisations are open to sponsoring Australian candidates. Migrate Mate surfaces roles where employers have confirmed willingness to support the E-3 process.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Public Policy Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as public policy, political science, economics, or international relations. The key is that the degree requirement must be tied directly to the duties of the role. Generic management positions that accept any degree often fail the specialty occupation test, so the job description needs to be precise about field requirements.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Public Policy Manager roles?
The E-3 is significantly more practical for Australian public policy professionals. There's no annual lottery, the annual allocation of 10,500 visas has never been exhausted, and the employer doesn't file a petition with USCIS. The process runs entirely through DOL for the LCA and then a consulate appointment, meaning a qualified candidate can start work within weeks of an offer rather than waiting for a lottery result.
Can I change employers or move to a different policy role on an E-3?
Yes, but you'll need a new LCA certified by the DOL and a new E-3 visa stamp before starting with the new employer if you're outside the U.S. If you're already in the U.S. in valid E-3 status, your new employer can file a new LCA and you can begin work once it's certified, though you'll need the updated stamp at your next international trip. Each role and employer requires its own LCA.
