Get your credentials evaluated before applying
Australian three-year BN degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. BSN for E-3 visa purposes, but some hospital credentialing teams will ask for a formal evaluation. Have a NACES-member agency assess your degree before you reach the offer stage so nothing stalls.
Pass NCLEX before your consulate appointment
U.S. employers sponsoring you for a med-surg RN role will require an active state nursing license before you start. You must pass NCLEX and hold a license in the state where you'll work, so begin the endorsement process as soon as you have a job offer.
Target hospital systems already enrolled in E-Verify
Hospitals enrolled in E-Verify have already cleared the compliance groundwork that often slows first-time E-3 sponsors. Search for med-surg openings at large health systems and academic medical centers, which run dedicated international hiring pipelines and understand the LCA filing requirements.
Find E-3 sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to search med-surg RN roles filtered by E-3 sponsorship history. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork once you have an offer, so you and your employer aren't navigating DOL certification from scratch.
Confirm the offer letter specifies your exact unit and start date
The LCA your employer files with DOL must reflect the actual worksite location and intended start date. A vague or incomplete offer letter delays certification. Ask HR to include your med-surg unit, shift structure, and proposed start date before the LCA is submitted.
Time your Australian consulate appointment around license issuance
You can't attend your E-3 consulate interview without proof of state licensure or a written job offer that confirms the licensing pathway. Schedule your appointment only after your state nursing board has issued your license number, not just confirmed your application is pending.
E-3 Visa Registered Nurse Med Surg: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Registered Nurse Med Surg jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended way to search for med-surg RN roles where employers are open to E-3 sponsorship. Standard job boards don't filter by visa type, so you end up cold-applying to postings where sponsorship was never on the table. Migrate Mate surfaces roles matched to E-3 eligibility, saving you the back-and-forth with recruiters who don't understand the visa.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Registered Nurse Med Surg role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree in nursing as a minimum entry requirement. Most hospital med-surg RN roles specify a BSN, which satisfies the E-3 specialty occupation standard. Roles that accept an associate degree in nursing without a BSN requirement can be harder to support, so confirm the job posting specifies a bachelor's degree before pursuing sponsorship.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Australian med-surg nurses?
The E-3 is considerably more practical for Australian nurses than the H-1B. There's no lottery, no annual cap that runs out, and no registration period to miss. H-1B selection is random and typically only 25 to 30 percent of registrants are chosen. The E-3 is available to Australian citizens year-round, and a two-year visa is renewable indefinitely as long as you maintain your RN position.
Can my employer file the E-3 LCA if they've never sponsored a visa before?
Yes, any U.S. employer can file an LCA with DOL regardless of prior sponsorship history. The LCA certifies that your offered wage meets the prevailing wage for an RN in that location. First-time sponsors often underestimate the documentation burden, so having a clear process in place before the offer is signed prevents delays between acceptance and your consulate appointment.
