Engineering Design Manager Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a engineering design manager in Pennsylvania?
The most direct path is earning an engineering degree, gaining several years of hands-on design experience, and obtaining Professional Engineer licensure through the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists. The PE credential is not always required, but it distinguishes candidates for senior roles, particularly in defense, infrastructure, and regulated manufacturing. Most Pennsylvania employers also expect experience leading design reviews and mentoring junior engineers before promoting to a management role.
Which companies hire engineering design managers in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring engineering design managers in Pennsylvania right now include Chewy, TE Connectivity, and Larson Design, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pennsylvania's deep concentration of aerospace, defense, and industrial manufacturing firms means openings are spread across both the Philadelphia corridor and the Pittsburgh metro.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most engineering design manager jobs?
Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and York have the most engineering design manager openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia leads because of its dense cluster of defense contractors, life sciences manufacturers, and infrastructure firms, while Pittsburgh draws heavily from advanced manufacturing, robotics, and energy companies, and the Lehigh Valley supports industrial and specialty chemicals employers that maintain large in-house engineering design teams.
Are there remote engineering design manager jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, but they're rare. Engineering design managers typically oversee physical prototypes, lab environments, or on-site teams, which limits full-remote arrangements. About 45% of engineering design manager openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in the program management and systems architecture functions where hands-on lab presence is not required daily.
How can I get hired as a engineering design manager in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a lead engineer or senior design engineer role first, then stepping into management. Pennsylvania employers like Lockheed Martin, Siemens, and Air Products run rotational engineering programs and new-graduate development tracks that expose early-career engineers to design leadership responsibilities. Building a portfolio of design projects, pursuing PE licensure candidacy through the Pennsylvania State Registration Board, and taking on informal team-lead assignments are the credentials that accelerate the transition from individual contributor to manager.
Where can I find and apply to engineering design manager jobs in Pennsylvania?
You can find and apply to engineering design manager jobs in Pennsylvania on Migrate Mate, which lists current Pennsylvania openings updated regularly. Find roles that match your experience and apply directly to the employers posting them.
