Engineering Director Jobs in Minnesota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a engineering director in Minnesota?
Most engineering directors in Minnesota reach the role through a combination of a bachelor's or master's degree in an engineering discipline and a progression through individual contributor, lead, and senior manager roles. Minnesota does not require a state-issued license to hold the title of engineering director, though roles in sectors like civil infrastructure may expect a Professional Engineer license from the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Geoscience, Landscape Architecture, and Interior Design. Strong candidates typically come from principal engineer or senior engineering manager positions within manufacturing, medical device, or technology companies.
How much do engineering directors make in Minnesota?
Engineering directors in Minnesota earn a median of about $172,130 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $128,430 for the lowest 10% to over $223,540 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire engineering directors in Minnesota?
Minnesota engineering director roles are posted by Optum, Target, and Vantive and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Minnesota's concentration of medical device manufacturers, Fortune 500 industrials, and large technology operations means engineering director openings appear across a wide range of sectors and company sizes.
Which Minnesota cities have the most engineering director jobs?
Eden Prairie, Plymouth, and Bloomington account for the largest share of engineering director openings in Minnesota. The Twin Cities metro drives the majority of postings given its density of corporate headquarters, medical device firms, and technology employers, while Rochester's strong presence of health systems and life sciences companies and Duluth's industrial and infrastructure sectors add consistent demand outside the metro core.
Are there remote engineering director jobs in Minnesota?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields. About 75% of engineering director openings tied to Minnesota are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting that the role often requires on-site collaboration with manufacturing floors, labs, or cross-functional teams. Strategic planning, vendor management, and reporting responsibilities tend to be the functions most suited to remote or hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a engineering director in Minnesota with little or no experience?
The most realistic path into engineering director roles for candidates without prior director experience is a strong senior engineering manager or principal engineer title at a Minnesota employer. Large Minnesota companies like Medtronic, 3M, and Eaton run structured leadership development and rotational programs that move high-performing engineers into management tracks. Building experience leading project teams, owning a product line budget, and earning a Professional Engineer license from the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Geoscience, Landscape Architecture, and Interior Design all strengthen a candidate's case when applying to director-level roles.
