Estimator Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a estimator in New York?
Most estimator positions in New York require a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, architecture, or a related field, though significant hands-on construction experience can substitute at many firms. New York does not issue a state license specifically for estimators, but professional credentials such as the Certified Professional Estimator designation from the American Society of Professional Estimators strengthen candidacy. Starting as a project engineer, field superintendent, or junior take-off technician at a New York contractor is a common entry path.
How much do estimators make in New York?
Estimators in New York earn a median of about $80,430 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $52,000 for the lowest 10% to over $139,690 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire estimators in New York?
Employers hiring estimators in New York right now include Jobot, Caliber Collision, and Arcadis, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large-scale commercial construction, public infrastructure, and utility sectors mean demand is spread across both major general contractors headquartered in the city and regional specialty subcontractors serving the five boroughs and surrounding counties.
Which New York cities have the most estimator jobs?
The cities with the most estimator openings in New York are New York, Syracuse, and Amherst. New York City drives the bulk of demand given its continuous pipeline of commercial, residential, and infrastructure projects, while areas like Long Island and the Hudson Valley generate steady openings through municipal contracts, school construction programs, and the large regional general contractors that serve those markets.
Are there remote estimator jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since estimating often requires site visits, subcontractor meetings, and close coordination with field teams. About 12% of estimator openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the most remote-compatible work being preliminary budget modeling, quantity take-offs from digital plans, and pre-construction cost analysis for firms that use cloud-based estimating platforms.
How can I get hired as a estimator in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a project engineer, estimating coordinator, or junior take-off role at a New York general contractor or specialty subcontractor, where many firms train candidates on the job. Large New York construction employers and the New York City School Construction Authority regularly bring on associates with construction management degrees for structured rotational programs. Building a portfolio of sample take-offs using publicly available plan sets and earning a Bluebeam or Procore certification gives early-career candidates a concrete edge in interviews.
Where can I find and apply to estimator jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to estimator jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across New York City, Long Island, upstate markets, and the broader metro region. Find roles that fit your experience and specialty and apply directly to employers without any intermediary steps.
