Financial Counselor Jobs in Indiana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a financial counselor in Indiana?
Indiana does not require a state-issued license specifically for financial counselors, but most employers expect a bachelor's degree and a nationally recognized credential such as the Accredited Financial Counselor designation from AFCPE or the Financial Counseling Certificate from NFCC-affiliated organizations. Candidates working in healthcare settings often pursue a medical financial counselor certification. Completing an accredited program and logging supervised client hours before sitting for a credential exam is the standard path Indiana employers follow when screening applicants.
Which companies hire financial counselors in Indiana?
Employers hiring financial counselors in Indiana right now include Magellan Health, Eskenazi Health, and Indiana University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Indiana's mix of large health systems, public universities, and nonprofit credit counseling agencies means openings appear across both urban hubs and mid-size communities throughout the state.
Which Indiana cities have the most financial counselor jobs?
Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Grissom ARB consistently post the most financial counselor openings in Indiana. Indianapolis drives the highest volume because of its concentration of major health systems, corporate headquarters, and nonprofit social service organizations, while Fort Wayne and South Bend generate steady demand through their regional hospital networks and growing university presences.
Are there remote financial counselor jobs in Indiana?
Yes, and they are more common than in many comparable roles because financial counseling work is largely desk-based, documentation-driven, and conducted over phone or video with clients. About 0% of financial counselor openings tied to Indiana are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, making it one of the more flexible fields for job seekers in smaller Indiana communities. Telephone-based consumer debt counseling and student loan advising tend to offer the most fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a financial counselor in Indiana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for patient financial services representative or financial counseling associate roles at Indiana health systems such as Indiana University Health or Ascension St. Vincent, which regularly bring on candidates without prior counseling experience and provide on-the-job training. Nonprofit credit counseling agencies affiliated with Indiana United Way chapters also hire and train entry-level staff. Candidates who complete the AFCPE's NFEC-approved coursework or earn a certificate in personal financial planning before applying move to the top of most Indiana hiring pools even without direct experience.
