INTRODUCTION
We believe that the way people interact with their finances will drastically improve in the next few years. We’re dedicated to empowering this transformation by building the tools and experiences that thousands of developers use to create their own products. Plaid powers the tools millions of people rely on to live a healthier financial life. We work with thousands of companies like Venmo, SoFi, several of the Fortune 500, and many of the largest banks to make it easy for people to connect their financial accounts to the apps and services they want to use. Plaid’s network covers 12,000 financial institutions across the US, Canada, UK and Europe. Founded in 2013, the company is headquartered in San Francisco with offices in New York, Washington D.C., London and Amsterdam.
THE ROLE
The EPD Finance function is a strategic partner to Plaid’s world-class Engineering, Product, and Design (EPD) organization. The team owns product-level revenue and gross margin forecasting, R&D investment planning, and the analytical frameworks that guide how Plaid deploys capital — and serves as a critical voice in long-range strategic and capital allocation decisions. As Head of EPD Finance, you will work closely with Engineering, Product, Design, GTM, Data, Accounting, and the Executive team to ensure our R&D engine and product portfolio deliver durable, compounding returns. You will report directly to the CFO and act as the primary finance partner to our CPO and CTO — their go-to thought partner on strategy, resource allocation, and execution across the EPD organization. You will inherit a lean, talented team with plans to scale appropriately over time.
Responsibilities
- Revenue & Gross Margin Forecasting — Build product-level forecasts that accurately predict Plaid’s topline performance in the near and mid-term. Construct long-term forecasts that balance bottoms-up and top-down methodologies to help size Plaid’s commercial opportunity 3–5 years into the future.
- Resource Allocation — Partner with the CPO and CTO on capital deployment, including headcount planning by key function and team, capacity modeling that maps directly to the product roadmap, the EPD AI tooling approach, and scenario planning. Identify opportunities to optimize COGS and opex in ways that increase velocity, while remaining disciplined on costs.
- Performance Visibility & Tracking — Own EPD performance tracking and reporting. Ensure we focus on the highest-signal metrics, including service delivery to customers. Partner with Data teams on data hygiene, timeliness, and the granularity needed to inform decisions across EPD and the broader business.
- Cross-functional Partnership — Build trusted relationships across the company, acting as the connective tissue between EPD and the rest of the business — and especially between Product and GTM, where you’ll provide counsel and analytical support on cross-functional priorities.
- Board Reporting — Own the Product narrative for quarterly Board meetings: business performance, strategic progress against near- and long-term goals, and a forward-looking perspective — synthesized into compelling, executive-ready materials.
- Team Building — Define the future-state of the EPD Finance team and execute against it. Hire, develop, and lead a high-performing team capable of operating at the pace and complexity of a scaled growth-stage business. Be a strong collaborator with peer Finance leads, and set the example for how your team partners with the rest of the Finance org.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 15+ years in Finance, with a background spanning management consulting, investment banking, private equity, or strategic finance at a high-growth technology company
- Deep fluency in product P&L finance — you can move fluidly between product-level revenue forecasting, gross margin analysis, headcount and capacity planning, and software economics without losing the narrative thread
- Exceptional analytical rigor paired with sharp business judgment — you know when the model needs more work and when it’s time to make a call
- A genuine builder with a player-coach approach: you’re energized by defining what “great” looks like and building the team and systems to get there
- Demonstrated success leading and developing high-performing finance teams
- Executive presence and exceptional communication skills — written, verbal, and visual — with the ability to influence senior stakeholders, technical leaders, and Board-level audiences
- Prior experience partnering with engineering and product leaders is a strong plus; fintech or financial services experience is a plus, but not required

Tips for Your Head Of Finance Job Search
Quantify your financial leadership impact
Head of finance roles demand proof of scale. Replace vague statements with specific outcomes: budget size managed, cost reductions delivered, or revenue growth you influenced. Hiring committees at this level expect numbers attached to every major initiative you led.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists head of finance openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Tailor your resume to ownership signals
Finance executives want to see that you own outcomes, not just report them. Use language that shows decision-making authority: 'restructured,' 'owned,' 'built from scratch.' Avoid passive phrases like 'assisted with' or 'supported,' which read as too junior for head-level roles.
Filter openings by stage and backing
A head of finance role at a Series B startup and one at a public company require very different skill sets. When searching, prioritize listings that name the company's stage, investor backing, or revenue range so you target roles where your experience fits the complexity.
Prepare a 90-day finance plan for interviews
Many head of finance interview processes include a case study or take-home. Coming in with a clear 30-60-90 day framework covering cash flow visibility, team assessment, and reporting structure shows operational readiness that other candidates skip.
Negotiate with total comp context in mind
Head of finance offers often include equity, bonus, and deferred compensation alongside base. Before negotiating, map out each component separately and know which elements have flexibility. Bundling everything into a single ask weakens your position at this seniority level.
Head Of Finance Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most head of finances?
The companies hiring the most head of finances right now include Plaid, Granica, and Formlabs, with the largest share of openings in New York, California, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Demand is highest in sectors with complex capital structures, including private equity-backed firms, healthtech, and growth-stage technology companies.
How many head of finance jobs are remote?
About 54% of head of finance openings are fully remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting increased flexibility at the senior leadership level. FP&A-focused and early-stage startup roles tend to offer the most remote options, while roles with board reporting responsibilities or on-site team oversight are more likely to require in-person presence.
How do you become a head of finance?
Most head of finance professionals build their path through progressive roles in FP&A, corporate finance, or accounting, eventually managing teams and owning cross-functional budgets. Earning a CPA, CFA, or MBA accelerates advancement. The critical step is taking on P&L responsibility or leading a finance function end-to-end before applying at the head level.
Can you get hired as a head of finance without senior leadership experience?
It depends on the company size and stage. At early-stage startups or small businesses, candidates who have managed a full finance function independently, even at a smaller scale, are competitive without a formal head title. Demonstrating ownership of budgeting, reporting, and strategic planning matters more than the seniority label on a previous role.
What does the head of finance interview process look like?
The process typically runs three to five rounds. It starts with a recruiter screen, followed by a hiring manager interview focused on your financial leadership experience. Later rounds usually include a technical case study or financial model review, a presentation to executives or board members, and a final culture or panel conversation with cross-functional stakeholders.
Where can I find and apply to head of finance jobs?
You can find and apply to head of finance jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from companies across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and apply directly to each one that fits.
