Health Information Management Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a health information management professional in California?
Most California employers require an RHIA or RHIT credential earned through AHIMA, which involves completing an accredited health information management program and passing the national certification exam. California does not issue a separate state license for HIM professionals, so the AHIMA credential is the primary hiring standard. An associate degree supports RHIT eligibility, while a bachelor's degree is needed for the RHIA and most management-track roles in California health systems.
How much do health information managements make in California?
Health information managements in California earn a median of about $61,810 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $43,800 for the lowest 10% to over $102,470 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire health information managements in California?
Employers hiring health information managements in California right now include Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Apple, and CVS Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated systems and academic medical centers drive steady HIM hiring year-round across coding, privacy, and data management functions.
Which California cities have the most health information management jobs?
Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and Sacramento have the most health information management openings in California. Los Angeles anchors the largest share of postings given its concentration of major hospital systems and payer headquarters, while Sacramento's volume reflects state government health agencies and Sutter Health's regional presence, and San Francisco draws demand from academic medical centers and health technology organizations in the Bay Area.
Are there remote health information management jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most healthcare roles, since much of health information management work is desk-based and data-focused rather than hands-on clinical. About 29% of health information management openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how widely California employers have embraced flexible arrangements for this function. Medical coding, clinical documentation improvement, and health data analytics positions are the most consistently offered in remote formats.
How can I get hired as a health information management professional in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an AHIMA-accredited HIM program and pursuing the RHIT credential, which California employers recognize as qualification for junior coding and technician roles even without prior work history. Large California systems like Kaiser Permanente and Dignity Health hire new graduates into HIM technician and medical records specialist positions, and lateral moves from patient registration, medical billing, or health unit coordinator roles are a common way in. Building experience with Epic or Cerner during a program externship strengthens applications significantly.
Where can I find and apply to health information management jobs in California?
You can find and apply to health information management jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across health systems, payers, and healthcare organizations of all sizes.
