Information Security Officer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a information security officer in New York?
Most information security officers in New York enter through a combination of a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity or a related field and professional certification, with the CISSP or CISM being the credentials employers most consistently require. New York has no state-issued license for this role, but large employers and regulated industries such as banking and healthcare often require compliance with the New York Department of Financial Services Cybersecurity Regulation, making familiarity with that framework a practical prerequisite.
How much do information security officers make in New York?
Information security officers in New York earn a median of about $134,660 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $83,110 for the lowest 10% to over $216,220 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire information security officers in New York?
Employers hiring information security officers in New York right now include Bank of China USA, Bloomberg, and CVS Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of regulated financial institutions, major hospital networks, and state government agencies means demand for this role is consistent across both private and public sector employers.
Which New York cities have the most information security officer jobs?
New York and Albany have the most information security officer openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its dense concentration of global financial firms, large hospital systems, and corporate headquarters, while Albany draws demand from state government agencies and technology contractors, and Buffalo has grown as an emerging hub for regional banks and healthcare networks.
Are there remote information security officer jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles, since a significant portion of information security work involves policy, analysis, and system monitoring that can be done off-site. About 8% of information security officer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting employer flexibility for non-operational functions. Roles involving hands-on infrastructure oversight, sensitive regulated environments, or in-person executive briefings are more likely to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a information security officer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving from an adjacent IT role such as systems administrator, network analyst, or IT auditor, then pursuing a CompTIA Security+ or similar certification to signal security competence. Large New York employers including major banks, hospital systems, and state agencies regularly hire junior security analysts who grow into officer-level roles. Aligning early work with New York DFS Cybersecurity Regulation compliance tasks is a practical differentiator that signals readiness for the regulatory expectations unique to this market.
