Insurance Sales Agent Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a insurance sales agent in Iowa?
To become an insurance sales agent in Iowa, you must obtain a producer license through the Iowa Insurance Division, which requires completing a state-approved pre-licensing education course and passing the Iowa insurance licensing exam for your chosen line of authority, such as life, health, or property and casualty. No college degree is required, though many employers prefer candidates with a background in business, finance, or communications. After passing the exam, you apply for your license through the National Insurance Producer Registry.
Which companies hire insurance sales agents in Iowa?
Employers hiring insurance sales agents in Iowa right now include State Farm, COUNTRY Financial, and RELI Exchange, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Iowa's concentration of insurance headquarters and regional offices in Des Moines means the state consistently generates more openings per capita than most Midwest states.
Which Iowa cities have the most insurance sales agent jobs?
Des Moines, Iowa, and Newton have the most insurance sales agent openings in Iowa. Des Moines dominates because it is home to a dense cluster of national and regional carrier headquarters, while Cedar Rapids and Davenport generate steady openings through large regional agencies, independent brokerages, and employer-sponsored benefits operations tied to their manufacturing and logistics economies.
Are there remote insurance sales agent jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields because client relationship building and territory coverage often require in-person contact. About 50% of insurance sales agent openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with remote arrangements most common in inside sales roles focused on inbound leads, renewals, or employee benefits consulting rather than field-based new business development.
How can I get hired as a insurance sales agent in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a licensed sales associate or agent-in-training position at one of the major carriers headquartered in Des Moines, such as principal financial or EMC Insurance, which run structured onboarding programs that pair new agents with experienced mentors. Obtaining your Iowa producer license before applying gives you a concrete edge over unlicensed candidates. Adjacent roles like customer service representative or claims associate at an Iowa carrier are also common entry points that lead to licensed sales positions within one to two years.
Where can I find and apply to insurance sales agent jobs in Iowa?
