Insurance Sales Agent Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a insurance sales agent in California?
To become an insurance sales agent in California, you must obtain a license through the California Department of Insurance. The path begins with completing a state-approved pre-licensing course, then passing the CDI licensing exam for your chosen line of authority such as life, health, or property and casualty. Once you pass, you submit a license application to the CDI. No college degree is required, though many employers prefer one.
Which companies hire insurance sales agents in California?
Employers hiring insurance sales agents in California right now include State Farm, Freeway Insurance Services America, and Farmers Insurance, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's scale means carriers, independent agencies, and large brokerages all recruit steadily, with the most consistent volume coming from companies with statewide retail or commercial client bases.
Which California cities have the most insurance sales agent jobs?
The cities with the most insurance sales agent openings in California are San Diego, Sacramento, and Los Angeles. Los Angeles dominates because of its sheer population density and concentration of small businesses, commercial real estate, and entertainment-industry clients, while San Diego and San Jose generate strong demand from their large employer bases in defense, biotech, and tech sectors respectively.
Are there remote insurance sales agent jobs in California?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields since much of insurance sales relies on in-person client relationship building. About 42% of insurance sales agent openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with remote work most prevalent in roles focused on inbound phone or digital sales rather than territory-based prospecting.
How can I get hired as a insurance sales agent in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a captive carrier agency as a licensed trainee, where companies such as State Farm and Farmers run structured programs that cover pre-licensing costs and provide a book of business to start from. Positions titled customer service representative or insurance account representative at regional agencies are common lateral entry points. Earning your California Department of Insurance license before applying is the single credential that moves your application to the top of the pile.
Where can I find and apply to insurance sales agent jobs in California?
You can find and apply to insurance sales agent jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from carriers, brokerages, and independent agencies hiring across the state. Search the listings by city or specialty, find roles that fit your license type and experience level, and apply directly.
