Insurance Sales Agent Jobs in Ohio: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a insurance sales agent in Ohio?
You must obtain a producer license through the Ohio Department of Insurance before selling policies in the state. The process requires completing a state-approved pre-licensing education course, passing the Ohio insurance licensing exam for your chosen line of authority such as Property and Casualty or Life and Health, and submitting a license application through the National Insurance Producer Registry. A background check is also required, and licenses must be renewed on a biennial basis.
Which companies hire insurance sales agents in Ohio?
Employers hiring insurance sales agents in Ohio right now include State Farm, Shelter Insurance Companies, and Kemper, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Ohio is home to major carrier headquarters including Nationwide and Progressive, which means a broad mix of direct-agent, captive, and independent agency roles are available across the state year-round.
Which Ohio cities have the most insurance sales agent jobs?
Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati have the most insurance sales agent openings in Ohio. Columbus draws the largest share of listings because Nationwide is headquartered there and the city's growing corporate corridor fuels demand for commercial and group benefits producers, while Cleveland and Cincinnati each support active regional agency markets tied to their manufacturing, healthcare, and financial services employer bases.
Are there remote insurance sales agent jobs in Ohio?
Yes, and more than many sales fields, since a significant portion of quoting, renewals, and client service can be handled by phone and video. About 40% of insurance sales agent openings tied to Ohio are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how carriers and independent agencies have adapted their distribution models. Personal lines and Medicare supplement roles tend to be the most remote-friendly, while commercial lines and group benefits positions more often require in-person client or employer meetings.
How can I get hired as a insurance sales agent in Ohio with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to a captive carrier's new-agent program, where companies like Nationwide and State Farm in Ohio regularly bring on candidates without a sales background and provide licensing support and structured training. Many independent agencies across Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati hire customer service representatives or policy processors as a stepping stone into a licensed producer role. Earning your Ohio property and casualty license before applying demonstrates initiative and removes a barrier that often filters out inexperienced applicants.
Where can I find and apply to insurance sales agent jobs in Ohio?
You can find and apply to insurance sales agent jobs in Ohio on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from carriers, independent agencies, and brokerages active in the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your license line, preferred region, and experience level, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
