Tips for Your Insurance Sales Agent Job Search
List your active state licenses upfront
Put every state insurance license you hold, including the lines of authority, in a dedicated section at the top of your resume. Hiring managers screen for licensure before reading anything else, and a buried or missing license line gets your application skipped.
Quantify production without overstating it
Replace vague phrases like 'grew a book of business' with concrete outputs: new policies written per month, retention rate, or cross-sell ratio. Reviewers are former producers who know immediately when numbers are inflated, so stick to figures you can defend in an interview.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists insurance sales agent openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings by carrier type not just title
A captive-carrier role and an independent agency role require different sales approaches and compensation structures. Filter your search by captive, independent, or broker channel so your cover letter and stated experience actually match what the hiring manager is looking for.
Prepare a concise pipeline story for interviews
Interviewers at insurance carriers almost always ask how you build and manage a prospect pipeline. Script a two-minute answer covering your lead sources, outreach cadence, and how you move prospects from quote to bind, using a real book you've worked.
Negotiate a draw or ramp structure before accepting
Most insurance sales roles are commission-heavy, so ask explicitly whether the offer includes a guaranteed draw during ramp-up, how long it lasts, and whether unearned draw is recoverable. Clarifying this before you sign prevents a cash-flow surprise in your first quarter.
Insurance Sales Agent Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most insurance sales agents?
The companies hiring the most insurance sales agents right now include Freeway Insurance Services America, Farmers Insurance, and Kemper, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Both captive carriers and independent agencies are actively recruiting, so the mix of employer types in those openings is broad.
How many insurance sales agent jobs are remote?
About 54% of insurance sales agent openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with the highest remote share in personal lines, final expense, and supplemental benefits roles where the entire sales cycle runs over the phone or video. Commercial lines and agency-based roles are more likely to require in-office or field presence.
How do you become an insurance sales agent?
You start by completing a state-approved pre-licensing education course for the lines of authority you want to sell, then pass the state licensing exam. Once licensed, most agents begin at a captive carrier or independent agency to build foundational sales and product knowledge. Continuing education is required to renew your license, and additional designations can support advancement.
Can you get hired as an insurance sales agent with no experience?
Yes, many carriers and agencies hire entry-level agents and cover pre-licensing costs if you commit to a production target. Emphasize any background in retail sales, customer service, or financial services on your resume. Captive carrier training programs are specifically designed for new agents, so targeting those roles first gives you structured support while you build a book.
What does the insurance sales agent interview process look like?
Most insurance sales agent interviews include a phone screen with a recruiter, followed by one or two rounds with a sales manager or agency principal. Expect behavioral questions about how you prospect, handle objections, and recover from rejection. Some carriers add a role-play exercise where you walk through a sales scenario or present a quote. Background and licensing checks typically run in parallel with final-round interviews.
Where can I find and apply to insurance sales agent jobs?
You can find and apply to insurance sales agent jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your license type, product experience, and preferred channel, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
