Tips for Your Outside Sales Manager Job Search
Quantify territory and quota results
Outside sales manager resumes live or die on numbers. Replace phrases like 'grew revenue' with your actual quota attainment percentage, the dollar size of your territory, and the number of reps you managed. Hiring managers skim for those figures first.
Tailor your resume to sales methodology
Many job postings name a specific methodology, MEDDIC, Challenger, or Sandler. Mirror that language in your resume's experience bullets. Matching their framework signals cultural fit before the first conversation even starts.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists outside sales manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target industries where your vertical expertise applies
Outside sales hiring managers heavily favor candidates who already know their customer base. If you've sold into healthcare systems, lead with that on healthcare company applications. Cross-industry resumes get filtered out fast at the screening stage.
Prepare for a ride-along or mock discovery call
Many outside sales manager interviews include a live role-play where you run a discovery call or coach a simulated underperforming rep. Practice narrating your coaching framework out loud so the structure sounds natural, not rehearsed, under pressure.
Negotiate on-target earnings structure, not just base
When you receive an offer, ask for the full OTE breakdown: base, commission rate, accelerators, and quota reset schedule. The base number alone tells you almost nothing about what top performers actually take home in the role.
Outside Sales Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most outside sales managers?
The companies hiring the most outside sales managers right now include Spectrum, Hibu, and Lowe's Home Improvement, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Florida, and Georgia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Industries with the most consistent demand include medical devices, industrial distribution, and commercial insurance.
How many outside sales manager jobs are remote?
About 50% of outside sales manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, though the nature of the role means most positions still require regular in-field presence. Sub-areas with the highest remote flexibility tend to be SaaS sales management and national account oversight roles where the team operates across multiple regions.
How do you become an outside sales manager?
Most outside sales managers start as individual-contributor field sales reps and build a record of consistent quota attainment before moving into management. From there, the typical path is a senior rep or team lead role that includes informal coaching responsibilities, followed by a formal manager promotion. Strengthening skills in CRM forecasting, rep development, and territory planning accelerates that transition significantly.
Can you get hired as an outside sales manager with little experience?
Candidates with limited formal management experience can still get hired by emphasizing documented sales results, any mentorship or peer training they have done, and a clear understanding of the coaching process. Targeting smaller companies or startups building a field sales team from scratch is the most practical entry point, since those employers often prioritize raw sales performance over a management title.
What does the outside sales manager interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a recruiter screening call, followed by a hiring manager interview focused on your territory management and team-building experience. A second round often includes a panel with a VP of Sales or regional director and may involve a role-play exercise where you coach a mock underperforming rep or run a simulated discovery call. Final rounds sometimes include a territory plan or 30-60-90 day presentation.
Where can I find and apply to outside sales manager jobs?
You can find and apply to outside sales manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your industry background, territory experience, and seniority level, then apply directly to each opening that fits.
