Laboratory Jobs in Mississippi: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a laboratory professional in Mississippi?
Clinical laboratory scientists in Mississippi must obtain licensure through the Mississippi State Department of Health, which requires completing an accredited medical laboratory science program and passing a nationally recognized exam such as the ASCP Board of Certification exam. Technicians at the MLT level typically need an associate degree from an accredited program plus the ASCP MLT credential. Mississippi accepts ASCP and AMT credentials for licensure purposes, making national certification the practical first step.
Which companies hire laboratorys in Mississippi?
Companies currently hiring laboratorys in Mississippi include Singing River Health System, Baptist Memorial Health Care, and University of Mississippi Medical Center, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Mississippi's largest concentration of laboratory positions sits within major health systems, state public health labs, and research institutions affiliated with universities such as the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University.
Which Mississippi cities have the most laboratory jobs?
Jackson, Pascagoula, and Gulfport account for the most laboratory job openings in Mississippi. Jackson dominates because it is home to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the state's largest academic medical center, and multiple state health agencies, while Hattiesburg and Gulfport draw openings through regional health systems and Gulf Coast industrial facilities that require environmental and quality-control testing.
Are there remote laboratory jobs in Mississippi?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of laboratory openings tied to Mississippi are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most bench and clinical work. The roles most likely to allow remote arrangements are laboratory informatics, data analysis, regulatory compliance review, and certain pathology or toxicology consultation positions where specimen handling is not required.
How can I get hired as a laboratory professional in Mississippi with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a laboratory assistant or phlebotomy technician role at a Mississippi hospital, since positions like these require only a high school diploma or short certification program and routinely serve as stepping stones into full technician roles. The University of Mississippi Medical Center and Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg both hire laboratory assistants and offer internal advancement. Completing an ASCP-recognized MLT program at a community college such as Holmes Community College and obtaining student externship hours at a Mississippi facility gives candidates a strong edge with hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to laboratory jobs in Mississippi?
You can find and apply to laboratory jobs in Mississippi on Migrate Mate, which lists current Mississippi openings across clinical, research, industrial, and public health settings. Search the listings, find the roles that match your credentials and experience level, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
