Legal Assistant Jobs in South Carolina: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a legal assistant in South Carolina?
South Carolina does not require a state-issued license to work as a legal assistant, so the path begins with education. Most employers prefer candidates who hold an associate or bachelor's degree in paralegal studies from an accredited program, such as those offered at Midlands Technical College or the University of South Carolina. Earning a voluntary certification from the National Association of Legal Professionals or a comparable body strengthens a candidacy considerably with South Carolina firms.
Which companies hire legal assistants in South Carolina?
Employers hiring legal assistants in South Carolina right now include Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A., Capstone Search Partners, and Murphy & Grantland, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Carolina's large regional law firms, hospital legal departments, and insurance carriers such as BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina are among the most consistent sources of legal assistant openings in the state.
Which South Carolina cities have the most legal assistant jobs?
The South Carolina cities with the most legal assistant openings are Columbia, Charleston, and Richland County. Columbia leads because it is the state capital and home to the South Carolina Supreme Court and General Assembly, which generate high demand for litigation and regulatory work, while Charleston's real estate and business growth sustains a large volume of transactional and corporate legal roles, and Greenville's expanding corporate corridor anchors demand in the Upstate.
Are there remote legal assistant jobs in South Carolina?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since legal assistants regularly handle physical court filings, in-person client intake, and on-site document review. About 15% of legal assistant openings tied to South Carolina are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting limited but real flexibility. The tasks most likely to go remote are legal drafting, document review, and administrative coordination for firms that have invested in cloud-based case management systems.
How can I get hired as a legal assistant in South Carolina with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a paralegal studies program at a South Carolina community college, such as Trident Technical College or Piedmont Technical College, and applying directly to smaller regional firms or legal aid organizations like South Carolina Legal Services that regularly take on entry-level assistants. A lateral move from a legal receptionist or court clerk position is another common door, and earning a paralegal certificate before applying gives candidates a measurable edge over those with general administrative backgrounds only.
Where can I find and apply to legal assistant jobs in South Carolina?
You can find and apply to legal assistant jobs in South Carolina on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the roles available, find the ones that match your background and preferred location, and apply directly through each listing.
