Legal Counsel Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a legal counsel in New Jersey?
To work as a legal counsel in New Jersey you must be admitted to the New Jersey State Bar, which requires passing the New Jersey Bar Examination administered by the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners and completing the character and fitness review. The path begins with a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school. Attorneys licensed in other states may seek admission by motion if they meet New Jersey's reciprocity requirements. Most in-house roles also expect relevant practice experience in a business or regulatory context.
How much do legal counsels make in New Jersey?
Legal counsels in New Jersey earn a median of about $161,430 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $93,810 for the lowest 10% to over $328,270 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire legal counsels in New Jersey?
Employers hiring legal counsels in New Jersey right now include Atlantic Health, Aecon Group, and DSV, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New Jersey's dense concentration of pharmaceutical headquarters, insurance carriers, and financial services firms makes it one of the more active in-house legal markets on the East Coast.
Which New Jersey cities have the most legal counsel jobs?
The cities with the most legal counsel openings in New Jersey are Iselin, Morristown, and Jersey City. Newark's role as the state's largest city and a hub for financial services and insurance drives much of that volume, while Princeton and Parsippany benefit from the concentration of pharmaceutical and technology company headquarters that maintain substantial in-house legal teams in those suburban corridors.
Are there remote legal counsel jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, and more than many legal roles, because in-house counsel work centers on document review, contract drafting, and business advising that translates well to remote settings. About 75% of legal counsel openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based nature of most corporate legal work. Contract review, compliance advisory, and general corporate matters are the functions most frequently offered on a flexible or fully remote basis.
How can I get hired as a legal counsel in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a junior or associate counsel role at one of New Jersey's large pharmaceutical or insurance employers, which regularly bring on newly admitted attorneys for contract management and regulatory support positions. Companies like those headquartered in the Princeton corridor and the Parsippany area often post associate general counsel or legal operations analyst openings that are designed for candidates with limited in-house experience. Transitioning from a law firm associate role in commercial litigation or corporate transactional work is the most common lateral move into New Jersey in-house positions, and passing the New Jersey Bar promptly after graduation remains the single credential that opens the most doors.
Where can I find and apply to legal counsel jobs in New Jersey?
