Licensed Practical Nurse Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a licensed practical nurse in Montana?
You become a licensed practical nurse in Montana by completing an accredited practical nursing program, then passing the NCLEX-PN exam and applying to the Montana State Board of Nursing for your LPN license. Montana participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so nurses licensed in other compact states may practice in Montana without obtaining a separate state license. Once licensed, you must renew through the Board and meet continuing education requirements each renewal cycle.
How much do licensed practical nurses make in Montana?
Licensed practical nurses in Montana earn a median of about $62,210 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $49,230 for the lowest 10% to over $74,330 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire licensed practical nurses in Montana?
Employers hiring licensed practical nurses in Montana right now include Glendive Medical Center, Sidney Health Center, and DaVita, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's mix of critical access hospitals, rural health clinics, and long-term care facilities means hiring is spread across the state, with larger systems in Billings and Missoula posting the most consistently.
Which Montana cities have the most licensed practical nurse jobs?
Glendive, Sidney, and Billings have the most licensed practical nurse openings in Montana. Billings leads because it is the state's largest city and home to major regional health systems that serve a broad surrounding area, while Missoula and Great Falls generate steady demand through their hospital networks, rehabilitation centers, and growing senior care facilities anchoring those communities.
Are there remote licensed practical nurse jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're rare. Hands-on patient care makes fully remote work uncommon for licensed practical nurses. About 0% of licensed practical nurse openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those roles are most often found in telephonic case management or utilization review functions rather than direct clinical care.
How can I get hired as a licensed practical nurse in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to long-term care and skilled nursing facilities, which in Montana are the most willing to hire new LPN graduates. Benefis Health System and Billings Clinic both offer structured onboarding for early-career nurses. Candidates who hold a current Montana LPN license and a BLS certification stand out, and those coming from certified nursing assistant or medical assistant roles already have a recognizable clinical foundation that Montana employers value.
